BUSINESS ACCOUNTS

After releasing the new WhatsApp beta for iOS 2.21.220.16, WhatsApp now highlights better when you’re chatting with a Business account. As spotted by techcrunch, WhatsApp is now beta-testing a new Cloud API that offers new services and, depending on which business account you’re chatting with, WhatsApp is now marking it better when business accounts are using external services to store your chats with them:

As you can see in this screenshot, changes are not about end-to-end encryption, because when you chat with a business account, your messages are still end-to-end encrypted. At your side, it’s just changed the way used to mark Business Accounts in the chat today.
After securely sending the message using end-to-end encryption, it depends on the business account how they process your message, because the way they use to store your chat with them may be different: they may rely on Facebook services or a third-party company.
If you follow WABetaInfo since a long time, you surely know our page about Terms of Service, where we talked about solution providers several times. Cloud APIs offer better tools and services to businesses to manage chats and respond to customers effectively. Seen that they use an external service to save your chats with them, you can contact them to know their privacy practices at any time, but your messages will never appear in anyone’s personal Facebook account.
Note that, when you chat with a business account, it does not mean they are using cloud services: for this reason, WhatsApp is making it easier to understand with special message bubbles in the chat if they use a different service. If the business account starts using cloud provider services after some time, it will be always marked in the chat even if you already have a chat with them.
Chatting with business accounts is always optional and nothing changes when you chat with your friends and family. From the official Help Center, you can also learn that you’re in control: you can always stop chatting with a business account and you can even block them.
