|Previous news?||WhatsApp is rolling out playback speeds for WhatsApp Web!|
In the article What happens after May 15th? we explained that WhatsApp was going to limit the functionalities of the app if the user doesn’t accept the new updated Terms of Service.
WhatsApp also received some questions from the Indian government 5 months ago about how user data is shared to Facebook, but today there is news. WhatsApp has declared that “We will not limit the functionality of how WhatsApp works in the coming weeks. Instead, we will continue to remind users about the update as well as when people choose to use relevant optional features, such as communicating with a business that is receiving support from Facebook… We hope this approach reinforces the choice that all users have whether or not they want to interact with a business. We will maintain this approach until at least the forthcoming PDP law comes into effect.”. So, for people that haven’t accepted the new Terms of Service, this is good news, at least until India’s Personal Data Protection Bill comes into effect.
Despite everything, WhatsApp still claimed that the Terms of Service does not change the way you chat with your friends and family, but they are needed to improve the communication with specific business accounts:
It’s not clear yet what WhatsApp will do in the future, seen that the situation is really confusing in other countries too, such as Germany, Turkey and Argentina, and it’s still unknown if WhatsApp will adopt the same policy worldwide.
If WhatsApp won’t limit the app functionalities when the user doesn’t accept the Terms of Service, why should users accept them? We stay with this question mark now.
