ADVANCED PROXY SETTINGS

In January, we shared an article regarding the ability to configure a proxy. A proxy acts as an intermediary between your device and the Internet. When you choose to use a proxy, your Internet requests are directed to the proxy server first. The proxy server then fetches the requested information on your behalf and returns it to you. In this way, a proxy can be highly advantageous, especially when attempting to access a service that would otherwise be inaccessible due to government censorship or restrictions. In fact, WhatsApp aims to keep the service up and running in those countries where governments block the app by filtering traffic.
The feature was previously released to some users after installing the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.13.10 update. In the same article, we announced that the feature was also available to some lucky beta testers and that we would have posted an additional announcement once the release became more widespread. Finally, with the latest WhatsApp beta update for iOS 23.13.0.72 available on the TestFlight app, WhatsApp is now releasing advanced settings when configuring a proxy, and they are available to some beta testers:

As you can see in this screenshot, it’s now possible to set ports when configuring a proxy, and this operation is optional. When configuring a proxy, setting a specific port offers several advantages. For example, it’s possible to isolate the traffic from other network services running on different ports: this ensures that the proxy operates independently by avoiding conflicts with other applications. In addition, the organization that sets up the proxy setting can apply firewall rules or access controls that only allow connections through that port: this helps in securing the proxy and controlling who can access it.

In the “Chat Port” screen, there is an option called TLS: it stands for Transport Layer Security and provides users with more secure communication over a network. When you enable TLS for a proxy port, it means that the data transmitted between the client and the proxy will be encrypted, ensuring privacy and preventing unauthorized access. However, even if you choose to use a proxy and keep this option disabled, your messages are still end-to-end encrypted. In addition, certain beta testers may experiment with a feature that allows them to export their proxy configuration.

Advanced proxy settings are available to some beta testers that install the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and they are rolling out to even more people over the coming days.
