WhatsApp lets businesses archive expired status updates for later use

In the post about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.11.18 update, we announced a feature that lets users archive their status updates on the device after 24 hours. This feature enables businesses to keep a private copy of their shared updates for future use without losing it once it disappears. Archived status updates are stored locally on the device for up to 30 days. This gives businesses enough time to review and reuse them. The archive is private, so only the business can access their stored updates.

WhatsApp to expand status archive from WhatsApp Business to WhatsApp Messenger

At that time, we announced the feature as being available exclusively on WhatsApp Business. Now, WhatsApp is finally expanding this feature to the standard WhatsApp Messenger app as well. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.18.1 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature that allows users to archive their status updates after they expire.

How WhatsApp status updates automatically disappear after 24 hours

The attached image shows a feature that lets users automatically save and organize their status updates after they expire. This feature is currently under development and scheduled for release in the future. However, it already promises to bring added convenience to the user experience. When a status update reaches the 24-hour limit, WhatsApp automatically removes it from the app and it is no longer visible to contacts. Users cannot access or retrieve it once it disappears unless they have saved it manually beforehand. Status updates are temporary, so WhatsApp deletes them without creating a built-in copy for later use. As a result, users must save a copy of any content shared as a status before the active time window expires.

WhatsApp to test Status Archive to preserve expired updates automatically

In a future update, WhatsApp aims to address this issue by introducing Status Archive. The built-in archive will automatically store status updates once they expire after 24 hours, instead of deleting them completely. WhatsApp will save archived updates privately on the device. This means that your archive will remain private and visible only to you. Users will be able to open the archive section to view, organize, or reuse their past status updates whenever needed. The feature will work in the background, so it doesn't require manual action to preserve expired updates.

Differences between WhatsApp Business and Messenger status archive storage

On WhatsApp Business, the app stores archived status updates for a limited period of up to 30 days. After 30 days, the app automatically removes them from the archive. This makes the system more focused on short-term reuse. The upcoming Status Archive feature for WhatsApp Messenger will store expired status updates indefinitely. This will give users long-term access to their updates without being constrained by a time limit. Despite this permanent storage, users will still have full control over their data. It will be possible to manually delete any archived update at any time if users no longer want to keep it.

Users can choose whether to enable or disable the archive

This feature will be optional. This means that users will have complete control over their status updates after they expire. They will be able to choose whether or not they want their status updates to be saved in the archive right from the app settings. If they prefer, they can disable the archive entirely so their updates are not stored at all once they disappear. On the other hand, users who enable it will benefit from having a personal record of their past updates.

WhatsApp Status Archive is under development

The feature that allows users to archive their status updates after they expire is currently under development, and it is planned for release in a future update. At the moment, WhatsApp is refining how the app can archive status updates automatically. Once testing is complete, this feature will be gradually introduced to users, making it easier to manage their previously shared updates.
