WhatsApp adds a new prompt to unmute channels on Android

WhatsApp is rolling out a new prompt that appears right after users follow a channel. Until now, WhatsApp muted every new channel automatically without any explanation. The new alert gives users a nudge to turn notifications on if they want to get alerts from that channel.

WhatsApp is now adding a new prompt when users follow a channel

The channel storage update is not the only thing WhatsApp shipped this week. The latest update also introduces a new feature that affects how users interact with channels right after following them. The new feature is available with the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.30.5 update, which users can download from the Google Play Store. Specifically, WhatsApp is rolling out a prompt that suggests users unmute the channel they just followed.

Why WhatsApp mutes channels by default

WhatsApp mutes every new channel automatically the moment a user follows it. This is intentional. Channels can share updates frequently, and WhatsApp does not want users to regret following one the moment the first notification arrives. Users who want notifications can turn them on manually at any time from the channel interface. Most users who follow many channels never change those settings, so many channels end up muted forever.

The new alert appears right where the follow button was

With the latest update, WhatsApp is addressing this issue by introducing a new prompt. After following a channel, WhatsApp replaces the "follow" button with a new alert in the same spot. The alert tells the user that the channel is muted and suggests they unmute it to get notifications. Users who want to receive notifications from the channel can unmute it immediately. Users who prefer to keep it muted can simply ignore the alert.

Why this matters for channel admins

A muted channel is a quiet channel. When followers never get notified about new updates, they may simply forget to open the channel. For a channel admin who invests time to share new updates, low view counts can be discouraging, especially when the reason is not lack of interest but lack of visibility. The new alert may encourage new followers to unmute the channel. This could translate directly into more views over time.

Users remain in control of their notification settings

The prompt is a suggestion, not a requirement. WhatsApp is not changing the default behavior since new channels still start muted. The alert simply makes sure that users know about the option and can enable notifications immediately if they want. Users who ignore the prompt keep the channel muted. Instead, those who change their mind later can always turn notifications on manually. Nothing forces anyone to receive notifications they did not ask for.

WhatsApp is rolling out the unmute prompt to Android users

The new unmute prompt is available to some beta testers who install the latest WhatsApp update from the Google Play Store. Note that some users on the stable version may also see this new alert. In addition, not every users may see this feature immediately since WhatsApp is gradually making it available to select users. WhatsApp has not announced when this feature will be available to everyone.
