After releasing end-to-end encrypted backups in the previous beta update, WhatsApp had to temporarily remove it due to a connection issue. In the meantime, WhatsApp has decided to roll out another feature called HD Photos.
HD Photos allows choosing the quality of the photo to send. There are 3 different options about the quality:
“Best quality” is obviously the option you’re looking for, to send HD photos. Unfortunately, it does not really reflect the name of this option, because photos are still compressed, even if the compression is lighter: WhatsApp is actually applying a compression algorithm, keeping about 80% of the original quality and, if the photo is bigger than 2048×2048, the image might be resized.
The old configuration allowed to keep about 70% of the quality, but large photos were always resized.
WhatsApp might change the “best quality” configuration at any time, increasing the percentage of the original quality.
Note that this is a beta feature, so WhatsApp is testing these parameters and it’s not over.
