WhatsApp to bring personalized chat themes to the web client

In April, we announced that WhatsApp is working on a feature that lets users choose a chat theme for the web client. The feature was expected to bring 49 different color options. These would allow users to personalize message bubbles and wallpapers directly from their browser. Users will also be able to apply a unique theme to individual chats or set a default theme for all conversations. These visual customizations will remain private, so other participants will not see the selected themes.

Ongoing refinements focus on usability and accessibility

At the moment, the feature is still under development. WhatsApp is currently refining the experience to make it easier for users to apply chat themes to specific conversations. However, it appears that the company's efforts are not only focused on improving usability. Specifically, WhatsApp aims that accessibility standards are properly respected once the feature becomes available.

A unified interface for choosing chat themes across WhatsApp Web

The image shows that WhatsApp keeps working on bringing chat themes to the web client. The interface to choose a chat theme is the same one previously spotted during development. In particular, the available themes will continue to be displayed in a grid layout within the settings page. This layout will make browsing and previewing themes more intuitive and organized for users. Note that the same screen will also be accessible from the chat info section. This would allow users to apply a specific chat theme to individual conversations. This confirms that WhatsApp is planning to offer both global and per-chat options on the web client.

WhatsApp shifts from quantity to a more focused set of chat themes

About two months ago, WhatsApp was planning to introduce 49 chat themes for the web client. Although some of those themes appeared quite similar to each other, WhatsApp wanted to offer a large variety of tones and styles to match different user preferences. However, the latest development suggests that WhatsApp is now focusing more on quality rather than quantity. As a result, the total number of chat themes currently available in development has been reduced to 39. This change may help WhatsApp offer a more polished interface by reducing visual redundancy.

Some wallpaper themes will bring more vibrant visuals to WhatsApp Web

Among these new themes, some include wallpapers that differ from the usual default background style. In particular, WhatsApp will offer eight themes that feature backgrounds with brighter color combinations. These wallpapers will give conversations a more vibrant appearance compared to the standard look of other themes. The addition of these styles may appeal to users who prefer a more colorful experience.

Bringing WhatsApp Web closer to the mobile customization experience

Chat themes could significantly improve the experience on WhatsApp Web. The feature will help bring the web client closer to the customization experience already available on Android and iOS. Users who frequently switch between their devices may appreciate to have similar visual settings everywhere they use WhatsApp. In addition, chat themes will make it easier to distinguish multiple conversations at a glance thanks to different color combinations and wallpapers. As the web client continues to evolve, features like chat themes may help make WhatsApp Web feel less limited compared to the mobile app.

Chat themes are under development on WhatsApp Web

The chat theme feature is under development, and it will be available in a future update. WhatsApp is currently refining the selection and layout of themes to ensure a smoother experience for users. Once testing is complete, WhatsApp will roll out this feature to some beta testers, making it easier for users to customize the interface of their conversations.
