WhatsApp will introduce separate channel list in the Chats tab

In the post about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.17.2 update, we announced a feature that brings channels to the Chats tab. With this functionality, users will be able to view channels in the Chats tab through a separate list. Since it is separate from other lists, WhatsApp will still keep chats and channels organized independently. This will ensure that conversations with contacts and groups remain distinct from followed channels.

WhatsApp to redesign chat lists to prevent interface clutter

With the introduction of the channel filter in a future update, there will be yet another list added to the Chats tab. This could further clutter the interface and make navigation less immediate for users. For this reason, WhatsApp is developing a feature designed to better organize chat lists. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.18.4 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a new system to view chat lists.

WhatsApp single-row chat list layout becomes harder to manage as lists grow

As you can see from the attached image, WhatsApp is currently testing a feature that would improve the interface of chat lists. Although this feature is currently under development and scheduled for release in a future update, the new interface will bring added convenience to manage preset and custom lists. At the moment, the Chats tab shows all preset and custom lists in a single row. When users create a large number of lists, this layout can quickly become cluttered and difficult to navigate. Having too many items in a single row may reduce visibility and make it harder to quickly access specific lists.

WhatsApp will redesign chat lists and organize them in a separate menu

In a future update, WhatsApp aims to address this issue by redesigning how users can interact with chat lists. Users will be able to decide which lists to show in the main interface. All other chat lists are displayed in a separate view, which can be viewed by tapping the new filter button, called "More". Here, users can select a list and WhatsApp will automatically open a separate section where chats and groups included into that list are displayed.

WhatsApp to give users more control over chat list visibility

The new organization of chat lists will allow users to focus only on the lists they actually care about. For example, it is currently impossible to remove the Favorites list, as WhatsApp continues to display it in the Chats tab even when it is empty. This can be inconvenient for users who do not use that list at all. With the new feature, users will finally have the option to hide it from the main interface. However, they will still be able to access it at any time from the separate menu. As a result, users will be able to keep the Chats tab cleaner and more relevant to their preferences.

WhatsApp will streamline chat navigation by improving list management

This feature will make the Chats tab more efficient and user-friendly, especially for those users who rely on multiple lists to organize their conversations. The new interface will reduce visual clutter and improve chat navigation. Users will be able to access their most important lists faster without being distracted by less relevant ones. Currently, users might need to scroll horizontally more often if they have a lot of lists. For this reason, refining how lists are displayed can ensure a smoother and more intuitive interface.

New redesign for WhatsApp chat lists is under development

The feature that introduces a new system to view chat lists is currently under development, and it is planned for release in a future update. At the moment, WhatsApp is refining how the app can show lists in a separate menu. Once testing is complete, this feature will be gradually introduced to users, making it easier to organize their chat lists without overcrowding the main interface.
