CREATE USERNAME
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.11.15 update, we announced that WhatsApp is currently working on a feature to allow users to create a username. Thanks to this enhancement, users will soon be able to personalize their profiles and easily connect with others using a unique identifier, making it easier for them to find and connect with friends, family, and contacts on the platform. This feature is still in development on the Android app, but we just discovered that WhatsApp is also working on bringing the ability to create a username to the web client!

As you can see in this screenshot, a new option to create a username is under development on WhatsApp Web. After choosing the username, it will be possible to find and contact other people without needing their phone number, expanding the possibilities for user interaction. It's worth noting that users will have the flexibility to change their username at any time. In addition, it's important to mention that when users connect with others through their username, it won't disclose their phone number. This added layer of security ensures that users can communicate with each other without sharing and compromising their personal contact details.
We believe that this development marks a significant step towards enhancing privacy and ease of communication within the WhatsApp ecosystem. Once users have chosen their unique username on the web client, they will have the flexibility to connect with others without the necessity of sharing phone numbers. This added layer of anonymity and convenience aligns with WhatsApp's commitment to providing a private and secure experience. As this feature progresses in its development, it promises to bring a new level of privacy to WhatsApp, allowing users to an enhanced communication experience across both mobile and web platform in the future.
A feature to allow users to create a username is under development and it will be available in a future update of the web client. As always, we will share another article when we have further details about this feature.
