WhatsApp explores multiple chat summaries on Android

In the post about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.12.10 update update, we announced a feature that lets users summarize multiple unread chats. This feature will allow users to catch up on multiple conversations more efficiently without opening them separately. Meta AI processes chat summaries securely, and they remain private through Private Processing. This means that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access the content of the messages being summarized.

Chat summaries are under development on Android and iOS

The feature is currently under development on WhatsApp beta for Android. WhatsApp aims to provide users with a faster and more convenient way to catch up on unread conversations without compromising their privacy. In the meantime, WhatsApp is also working on bringing the same functionality to the iOS app. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 26.15.10.71 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature that allows users to generate private summaries of their unread chats.

Private summaries for WhatsApp chats

As you can see from the attached image, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature designed to elaborate private chat summaries. Although this feature is currently under development and set for release in a future update, it already promises to make summarization more convenient than ever. At the moment, users in certain regions can generate message summaries by opening a conversation. Here, users can tap the button "summarize" to elaborate a concise summary. By reading a summary, users can easily understand the key points of a conversation since it condenses multiple messages into a concise overview. Private Processing generates a secure summary of unread messages. In particular, it processes the content in a way that preserves privacy, while still delivering a clear overview of the conversation.

What's Private Processing on WhatsApp?

Private Processing is a technology developed by Meta to enable AI features on WhatsApp while preserving user privacy. A secure and isolated environment process the messages, and no one else can access the data. It is built on a confidential computing system that uses a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Here, data is encrypted and sent through a secure channel that hides their identity. The channel also prevents interception since it uses advanced techniques like Oblivious HTTP to prevent Meta from linking requests to specific users. The AI processes the data it does not store messages, not even when it completes the task. As a result, neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read the messages or access the generated results at any point during this process. Private Processing is optional and it only activates when users enable it from the app settings and choose to use AI features like message summaries.

Is Private Processing secure?

Private Processing provides strong security guarantees, and its integrity has been independently verified by third-party auditors. In particular, NCC Group and Trail of Bits confirmed that its confidential computing architecture and implementation meet high privacy and security standards for the message summarization service and other AI-powered features.

Handling private summaries across multiple chats

Generating a summary for a single chat is very convenient, since it allows users to avoid reading every message and focus only on the key points. This makes it much easier to catch up quickly. However, generating summaries for multiple chats may become complicated. Every chat requires a separate request, which can slow down the process. As the number of chats with unread messages increases, this operation becomes less practical. This is why summarizing multiple chats at once can significantly improve the user experience.

WhatsApp is working on a unified unread chat summary feature

In a future update, WhatsApp will address this issue by introducing a new summarization feature. This feature will add a new entry point directly in the inbox containing unread messages. Here, users will be able to easily get a summary of all unread chats. If users tap this button, WhatsApp will generate a summary using Private Processing and present an overview of all unread conversations. The summaries are still created securely using Private Processing, so the chat content remains protected during the process. Only the user who requests the summary will be able to view it. This means that, even though the content is processed to generate a useful overview, it is not accessible to anyone else.

Private summaries of unread chats are under development

The feature that allows users to generate private summaries of their unread chats is under development, and it will be available in a future update. WhatsApp is currently working on making the process seamless. Once development is complete, the feature will be rolled out to select beta testers, making it easier for users to get a quick overview of their unread conversations without opening them individually.
