WhatsApp launches AI content label for channels on iOS

WhatsApp is gradually rolling out a new label to easily mark AI-generated media in channels. Once added, the label is visible to every follower who opens the channel. In some countries, channel admins are legally required to add it whenever they share AI-generated media.

WhatsApp rolled out the AI content label on Android

In the post about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.34.5 update, we announced the AI content label for channel admins. The feature lets admins mark updates that contain AI-generated media by selecting the option "Add AI content label". Once they add the label, it appears on the bubble and cannot be removed. In some countries, channel admins are legally required to label their AI-generated media.

WhatsApp is bringing the same AI content label feature to iOS

WhatsApp is not limiting this update to the Android app. Today, WhatsApp is bringing the label to the iOS app as well. The feature is available after installing the WhatsApp beta for iOS 26.34.10.70 update from the TestFlight app. With this update, WhatsApp is introducing the AI content label for channel admins. This feature offers channel admins on iOS the same tool already available on Android.

WhatsApp notifies admins about the labeling requirement

Admins can understand when the feature is available by looking at the top of the channel interface. When the AI content label feature is available, WhatsApp shows a banner to inform channel admins that they require to label AI content in their channels. This banner only appears when the feature is available, so admins who do not see it yet will have to wait for a future update. This makes it clear that admins in certain countries need to label their AI-generated updates.

How to add the AI content label

Admins can label their updates directly from the context menu. Here, they can find the option called "Add AI content label". This option lets channel admins add a small label to inform followers that they used AI to create or edit the media. As soon as admins add the label, it becomes visible to everyone in the channel, including other admins. However, it is not possible to remove this label after the admin confirms the action. In some cases, WhatsApp may identify AI-generated media and label the update automatically.

The label applies to any AI tool, not just Meta AI

Channel admins need to add the label regardless of which AI tool they used to create or edit the media. WhatsApp defines AI content as "any images, videos or other media made or edited using AI tools". This means that content created with ChatGPT, Gemini, or any other tool is subject to the same requirement as content made with Meta AI. The obligation does not depend on the AI tool used, but on whether the content is AI-generated.

Why transparency about AI content matters for followers

A photo that looks completely real but was generated by an AI tool can mislead followers. Without a label, followers may not understand whether certain updates are authentic or AI-generated. The AI content label removes this ambiguity. Followers who see it can understand that the media was not captured by a camera or created by a human artist, but it was generated. Some followers trust channels with information that matters to them. For those people, the label is not just a tag, but it changes how they read the content.

WhatsApp is rolling out the AI content label to some iOS beta testers

The new label for channel updates is available to some beta testers who install the latest update from TestFlight. However, the feature may also be available to some users on the stable version. Since WhatsApp is rolling out this functionality gradually, it may not be immediately visible. For users who cannot label their updates, they may be in a country where this feature is not required yet. At the moment, WhatsApp has not shared where this label applies or when the rollout will expand further.
