Status updates are coming to the top of the Chats tab

In the post about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.11.2 update, we announced a feature that brings status updates to the top of the Chats tab. This functionality will allow users to quickly view and interact with recent status updates by displaying them at the top of the chat list. This means that status updates from contacts will become more immediately visible in the main chat screen. This will make it easier for users to keep up with updates without opening the Updates tab.

The feature is under development due to intense UI testing

The feature that adds status updates at the top of the chat list is still under development. WhatsApp is carefully testing how the new design integrates with the existing chat layout. WhatsApp aims that the new feature does not negatively affect both usability and performance. That's why it may take some time before the feature is ready and potentially released. As a result, WhatsApp plans to introduce some refinements to the chat list to prevent a cluttered interface.

A redesigned top app bar with a logo in the Chats tab on WhatsApp beta for Android

A consistent top app bar design since 2013

The attached image shows that WhatsApp may replace the app name with the branding logo in the future. Since at least 2013, WhatsApp has consistently displayed the app name in the top app bar. This has established a stable and recognizable navigation pattern for users. Back in 2013, the interface also included the WhatsApp logo alongside the text. The logo further reinforced the brand identity within the header. Around 2015, WhatsApp removed the logo from the top bar, and the app name was the only primary identifier. Despite this change, the app name has remained in place ever since, and it is now a familiar and consistent element of the interface.

WhatsApp will bring status updates closer to the main interface

In a future update, WhatsApp will refine the top app bar by including status updates. As users scroll through this area, they will be able to browse the latest status updates shared by their contacts directly within the Chats tab. This is similar to how stories are presented on Instagram within the main tab. As a result, the Chats tab may become a central hub where both chats and status updates are displayed together in one screen.

Why the top bar could start feeling crowded

Regardless of whether you like seeing status updates in the top app bar, we can all agree that the layout will look cluttered. The top app bar already includes the app name, the overflow menu, and, depending on the region, an additional shortcut such as the camera or payments. With all these elements combined, the top app bar could quickly become visually overloaded after adding status updates. This would reduce clarity and make the interface feel less organized. For this reason, WhatsApp appears to be working toward simplifying the top area to make it less cluttered and easier to use.

WhatsApp is working on replacing the app name with the official logo

One possible solution to this issue is replacing the app name with the official logo in the top app bar. We can confirm that this layout is currently being tested by WhatsApp. It takes up less horizontal space than a full text label, since its width is more compact. This change would free up more space for other interactive elements such as status updates. WhatsApp can also preserve a recognizable interface by introducing the branding logo. By showing the official logo instead of the app name, WhatsApp can finally reduce visual clutter and create a cleaner top section.

The new top app bar is still not confirmed for release

The feature that replaces the app name with the branding logo is under development, and it may be available in a future update. However, this does not necessarily mean it will be released. WhatsApp will need to evaluate whether integrating status updates into the top of the Chats tab actually makes sense from a usability and design perspective. WhatsApp would only consider whether it is worth replacing the app name with the official logo after this evaluation. As with many experimental features, the final decision will depend on different testing results.
