WhatsApp is rolling out support for up to 4 pinned messages

WhatsApp is introducing a feature that lets users pin more than three messages in their chats and groups. Users who rely on pinned messages now have one more slot available. This feature is helpful for anyone who regularly pins multiple messages in their conversations.

WhatsApp already lets users pin messages in their chats

In the post about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.27.4 update, we announced a feature that brings notifications to pinned messages. With this feature, WhatsApp sends a notification as soon as someone pins a message in a chat or group. This makes it easier to inform users when a message is pinned. The notification shows the content of the pinned message, so users know what it says before opening the conversation. WhatsApp doesn't show notifications for pinned messages if the chat is muted. Since alerts for pinned messages follow the same rules as regular message notifications, users who want to receive them will have to unmute the chat.

WhatsApp is now raising the pinned message limit to four

Currently, users can pin up to 3 messages at the top of the conversation screen. But now, WhatsApp is extending this limit to let users pin an additional message. We discovered this feature with the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.35.8 update, which is available on the Google Play Store. In particular, WhatsApp is rolling out support for four pinned messages in chats and groups. This means that users will no longer need to choose which three messages matter most.

How to pin four messages on WhatsApp

Users can pin the fourth message just like the others. They need to tap and hold the message they want to pin. This action opens the message menu, where they can select the pin option. After choosing how long to keep the message pinned, WhatsApp adds it to the top of the chat alongside the other three. Users who have multiple pinned messages can tap the top bar to cycle through all of them in order. The fourth message joins the rotation without changing how the feature works.

The pinned message limit in groups vs individual chats

It is possible to pin up to four messages in both group chats and individual conversations. In groups, the new slot is the most useful since active conversations may fill up pinned slots faster than a one-on-one chat. Even with the new limit, group admins can control who can pin messages based on the group permissions they set. In individual chats, three pinned messages were already enough for most users. However, the fourth slot can be helpful for anyone who needs it.

Why users need more than three pinned messages

In group chats, three pinned messages may fill up fast. For example, a group where members share different events might need more pinned messages. With the old limit, someone always had to choose what to remove from the top of the screen to pin a new message. A fourth slot allows users to keep more content visible at the top without removing another pinned message.

WhatsApp keeps improving the pinned message feature

WhatsApp keeps working on improving the experience with pinned messages. Recently, we reported that WhatsApp is also testing the ability to pin channel updates. WhatsApp also introduced notifications for pinned messages, so users can find out immediately when someone pins a message without opening the chat. These updates show that WhatsApp sees pinned messages as something worth building on over time. We can already anticipate more features for pinned messages available in the future.

WhatsApp is rolling out four pinned messages to Android beta testers

Support for four pinned messages is available to some beta testers who install the latest update from the Google Play Store. WhatsApp is rolling out this functionality gradually, so not every beta tester will be able to pin up to four messages immediately. If this feature doesn't work yer, it should become available to more accounts over the coming weeks. WhatsApp has not announced when this feature will be available in the stable version.
