After releasing a redesign for chat bubbles for all beta testers, WhatsApp is now working to improve other features implemented in their app.
At the moment, when you back up your chat history, WhatsApp includes all status updates in the backup, so you can find them again if you reinstall the app: their next plan is to avoid backing up status updates, in order to save space when you back up your chat history.
It’s true that you have unlimited storage on Google Drive if you back up your WhatsApp chat history, but WhatsApp is planning this change because backups can also be saved locally in your phone storage.
Sometimes, people upload several videos as status updates, and they might increase the size of your backup: disabling this option for status updates will help to save space on your device. It doesn’t make much sense to back up them, as they expire after 24 hours.
WhatsApp already excludes status updates on WhatsApp for iOS to save space on iCloud and WhatsApp will stop backing up status updates on WhatsApp for Android in the next versions.
