After releasing the new archive on WhatsApp beta for Android, WhatsApp is finally rolling out the same feature for iOS beta!
We have called it using different names for a long time: vacation mode, read later, ignore archived chats, and finally the new archive.

What is the new archive? When the option “Keep chats archived” is enabled within WhatsApp Settings > Chats, every time you receive a message from an archived chat, it won’t be unarchived. Notifications from archived chats are also automatically muted. Thanks to the new archive, you can also quickly manage multiple archived chats at once using the “Edit” button.

If you don’t like the new archive, you can disable “Keep chats archived”, so WhatsApp will use the old archive.
Remember that, when the new archive is enabled:

  • The archived chat cell is also pinned at the top of your chat list if you have archived chats into
  • The archived chat cell is always visible and cannot be hidden.
  • The archived chat cell reports the number of unread chats.
  • If someone mentioned you in an archived group, you will see the symbol @ in the archived chat cell.

The feature is available today for iOS users. If you don’t see it, be sure that the option “Keep chats archived” is enabled. If this option is missing in WhatsApp Settings > Chats, it means the feature is not available for your WhatsApp account. In this case, don’t worry: the feature will be rolled out in a future update for you, just be patient!
