Some users are experiencing an issue when updating their privacy settings on WhatsApp for iOS. The issue is from the server side, so it is not due to a broken update for WhatsApp for iOS. What’s happening?

WHATSAPP OUTAGE

WhatsApp is experiencing a server-side issue so it is impossible to update the privacy setting “who can see when I’m online”. It seems it may be a worldwide outage on WhatsApp for iOS as a lot of people are currently experiencing issues like this one and reporting to us. The extent of the issue and the number of users affected is not currently known as it happens only on iOS. At this time, it is unclear what is causing the current issue: the company has not released any official statements or provided any information on the reasons behind the issue. We can confirm the messaging service works without issues and no other services are down at the moment.

RECENT UPDATES ABOUT THE ISSUE:

  1. Issue detected: certain WhatsApp users may be unable to update their privacy settings for “online” (05:14 UTC time).
  2. WhatsApp for iOS: after some tests, we discovered that this issue is limited to the iOS platform as reported in this tweet (05:50 UTC time).
  3. Online privacy setting is on “everyone” by default: it is only visual as this tweet reported (06:07 UTC time).
  4. The issue has finally been fixed so people on iOS can update their privacy settings for “online” again (07:50 UTC time).

If your online presence on WhatsApp is hidden, don’t worry: your current configuration is safe so nobody can see when you’re online if you disabled this feature.

Unfortunately, we don’t have information on when this issue will be addressed by the server team. We will keep you up to date here and on Twitter when we have further details to share with you about the outage.
