In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.16.5 update, we shared some information regarding a redesigned search bar that aligns with the rules of Material Design 3. Instead, users could experiment with new safety tools with the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.16.6, to help users understand what they can do when receiving a message from unknown senders. Unfortunately, these updates also introduced a serious issue with sorting chats and, according to our reports, it appears that the problem was enough widespread:

As you can see in this screenshot, the chats may appear disorganized. Specifically, it doesn’t update the chat list and the chat containing the most recent message doesn’t get moved to the top of the conversation list when a new message arrives, causing confusion among users. The only way to temporarily resolve the issue was to close WhatsApp and reopen the application. However, the problem could still reoccur. We also reported this issue on Twitter to further highlight the bug in order to ensure that additional users did not install this version.
Although our warning on Twitter, many people discovered that the update had automatically been installed due to the auto-download settings of the Google Play Store. However, we can finally confirm that the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.16.7 version is a bug-fix update that addresses the mentioned issue, so you can finally use WhatsApp without experiencing this issue.
The fix is rolling out after installing the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.16.7 update from the Google Play Store, so make sure to update to this build in order to use a version of WhatsApp without the bug.
