ANIMATED EMOJIS

Last month, we announced that WhatsApp was working on an animated emojis feature with Lottie, an optimized library that lets designers easily create animations that are small in size while maintaining their proportions and quality. We have observed that this new cosmetic feature has been requested by many users over the past years, so it is definitely an appreciated addition. In the article where we announced the feature the first time, we published a video where we presented the first animated emoji designed with Lottie: the Partying Face emoji. Today, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on 6 additional animated emojis for a future update of the app!

As you can see in this video, WhatsApp keeps working on supporting more animated emojis in addition to the Partying Face emoji that we previously spotted, before the release of the feature. In particular, they designed the following emojis: Face with Tears of Joy, Loudly Crying Face, Crying Face, Face with Open Mouth, Red Heart, and Fire. In our opinion, we believe that WhatsApp has chosen these specific emojis because they could be the ones that any user on any instant messaging app uses most frequently.

Note that the quality of the animated emojis you see in this video will differ significantly from the ones you send in terms of smoothness, as this video is compressed to ensure you a better browsing experience on this article. Therefore, we can assure you that the quality of the animated emojis will be very high.

As we said in our previous article, although the introduction of animated emojis will be appreciated by many users, we still believe that they can potentially cause distractions for those who prefer a straightforward messaging experience without unnecessary animations. For this reason, we think that having a toggle option within WhatsApp Settings to manage this feature would be beneficial.

The ability to send animated emojis is still in development and it will be released in a future update of WhatsApp Desktop beta. Note that we still confirm that WhatsApp is working on bringing the same feature to a future update of WhatsApp beta for iOS and Android, and we will publish an additional article when we have new information to share with you.
