In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android update, we shared important information about a new feature under development: photo quality. Thanks to this feature, it will finally be possible to share photos with better quality in a future update of the app. The same feature has also been spotted during the development of WhatsApp Desktop beta, making it easier for users to share photos with better quality. Finally, thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS update available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that this feature is also in development on the iOS app:

As you can see in this screenshot, WhatsApp plans to introduce a new HD button within the drawing editor header: this button opens a menu that lets us configure the quality of the photo. This is an important improvement as it will let us share an image with better quality by choosing the “HD Quality” option. Note that the default option will always be “Standard quality” for any photo so you have to select the HD option every time you want to share a new photo with improved quality.

Note that our previous statement reported that this option would have allowed us to share photos with their original quality. Unfortunately, after investigating the newest updates, we discovered that there is now a different configuration for this feature that will limit the original quality to 90%, as mentioned in this tweet. This option will still preserve image dimensions, but light compression is still applied to the image.

In addition, some users may experience a crash when playing videos within chats and status, as announced on Twitter. We expect a bug fix update that addresses this issue soon so keep your version of WhatsApp up to date on TestFlight.

The ability to manage the photo quality is under development and it will be released in a future update of the app. As always, we’re going to share any additional detail by publishing a new article on this website.
