A lot of WhatsApp users have been asking for a compatible version with iPad for years. In the past, we also posted news about WhatsApp for iPad by sharing the details on X, but a release date was unknown as the companion mode was not a perfect solution and it was not ready on iOS. In order to test the companion mode, WhatsApp released a native app built with Mac Catalyst so users could already start testing the feature and the app. Finally, after waiting for a very long time, we’re happy to announce that a beta version compatible with iPad can now be installed via the TestFlight app for all beta testers who can already use the beta app on their mobile devices.
To set up WhatsApp on your iPad, you’ll need to have the beta iOS version of the app installed on your iPhone and iPad. Once this is done, you need to use WhatsApp on your iPhone and open WhatsApp Settings > Linked devices > “Link a device” in order to scan the QR code by using your iPad. After linking your iPad with your iPhone, you will be able to use WhatsApp on your iPad independently, without needing your phone to be connected to the Internet, which is a significant convenience for those who work on their tablets.
The new companion mode also means that any messages sent or received on your iPad will be synced with your phone, regardless of whether it is an iOS or Android device: this way, you won’t miss out on any important messages while using your iPad when you turn off your mobile device. In addition, your messages and calls are still protected with end-to-end encryption when using the companion mode, so nobody can read your personal messages and listen to your private calls.
Note that this is a beta version, and the companion mode is still in beta, so some features may still not properly work such as the ability to view and post status updates and some functionality regarding the live location. WhatsApp plans to address these issues by introducing bug fixes and several improvements in a future update of the app.
Anyone who has access to the WhatsApp beta iOS program can install the app on their iPad starting today. In case you don’t have WhatsApp beta on TestFlight, please be patient until it is released on the App Store. Unfortunately, we do not have a release date for the availability of the WhatsApp for iPad app on the App Store, but we will let you know when you can get it.
