PRIVATE WRITING HELP ASSISTANT

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.19.8 update, we announced that a feature to get writing suggestions was under development. This feature will allow users to privately enhance their messages using AI-powered assistance. It offers different tones to help customize messages before sending, providing multiple suggestions to choose from. Users can review and select the version that best fits their intent, all while keeping their communication secure and private. It appears that WhatsApp is now testing this feature with a very limited audience, as some users have started seeing signs of the new functionality appear in their app. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.23.7 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out a Writing Help assistant feature powered by AI Private Processing!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, a limited number of users can now explore a new tool designed to assist with message writing in a private and secure way. This new feature relies on Private Processing, an architecture developed by Meta that processes user requests and messages securely and anonymously. Private Processing uses encrypted connections and anonymous routing to ensure that requests sent to the AI service cannot be linked back to the user's identity. When users choose to enhance their messages, Writing Help sends a request to the Private Processing infrastructure. This system securely generates multiple message suggestions without storing any original message data or any information related to the response, including message suggestions, leaving no trace behind.

When Private Processing is enabled in the app settings, some users will notice that once they start typing a message of about three or four words, the sticker icon within the text field is replaced by a pen icon, representing the new AI-powered writing assistant. By tapping this new button, users can request suggestions from Meta AI to improve the structure, clarity, or tone of the message they have just typed.

If the user decides not to confirm or proceed, the message never leaves their device. Only when the user explicitly accepts to use Writing Help, the message is encapsulated into a private request and sent securely to Private Processing. Private Processing then analyzes the message, generates several suggestions, and sends back a private response to the user's device. This approach ensures that user data remains confidential throughout the entire process, with no message content stored or shared externally. The Private Processing screen also assures users that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access their messages or AI-generated suggestions, thanks to this advanced AI technology.

Writing Help provides at least three suggestions that reflect the tone selected by the user from five available options. These include the rephrase tone, which improves the overall structure and clarity of the message without changing its meaning. The professional tone adjusts the message to sound more formal and suitable for business contexts. Funny adds playful or humorous elements to make the message light-hearted and entertaining. Supportive transforms the message to sound more empathetic and encouraging, perfect for offering comfort or motivation. Finally, the proofread tone focuses on correcting grammar and spelling errors to ensure the message is polished and clear. WhatsApp may consider updating or adding more tones in the future while making refinements to improve the overall messaging experience.

Once the suggestions are received, users can choose to keep their original message or replace it with one of the AI-enhanced options generated through Private Processing. It's worth noting that, if the user opts to send a message suggested by Meta AI, the recipient will never know that the message was improved using this AI assistance. Users also have the option to send feedback about the quality of the generated messages directly through the app. However, it is important to note that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can see the content of the messages when this feedback is sent. The feedback only includes a simple flag indicating user satisfaction, such as whether the response was good or of low quality.

Writing Help is completely optional and respects user choice at every step. Private Processing is disabled by default, so the feature is not activated automatically. Users who wish to use AI assistance must manually enable Private Processing themselves in the app settings since the feature only activates once this option is turned on. If users decide not to use Writing Help or want to stop using it, they can simply avoid tapping the AI writing assistant button or disable the feature again in the app settings. By doing so, users also avoid accidentally triggering the AI tool while typing.

WhatsApp will never modify or replace messages automatically without explicit user consent. The final decision to use AI-enhanced suggestions is always up to the user. Additionally, Writing Help does not analyze the entire conversation context to generate suggestions, as it only securely processes the specific message the user chooses to send to Meta AI. This ensures that other messages in the conversation stay inaccessible and private, and that the message shared with Meta AI remains confidential due to the secure and anonymous design of Private Processing.

At this early stage, Writing Help is available to a very small group of users to carefully monitor its performance and gather initial feedback. This cautious approach helps ensure that any issues can be addressed before a potential broader release, allowing WhatsApp to fine-tune the feature for optimal reliability and user experience. Once WhatsApp confirms that the feature meets performance expectations, they may gradually roll it out to a wider audience.

A Writing Help assistant feature powered by AI Private Processing is available to a limited number of users who install the latest updates of WhatsApp beta for Android from the Google Play Store, and it is rolling out to even more people over the coming weeks.
