SEARCH USERNAME
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.25.19 update, we announced that WhatsApp is working on a feature to contact users through their username. Thanks to this feature, users will be able to experiment with a more efficient system to connect with friends, family, and contacts on the platform, enhancing the communication process. While WhatsApp is already working on allowing users to create a username from the web client, WhatsApp is now developing a similar option spotted in the Android app, enabling users to search for others by their username.

As you can see in this screenshot, it will be possible to search for users by entering their username into the search bar, in a future update of the web client. This username-based search feature will enhance user experience by eliminating the need for phone numbers, providing a convenient and privacy-conscious method for users to discover and connect with others within the WhatsApp ecosystem.
In our opinion, WhatsApp will add a new layer of privacy thanks to the introduction of usernames. This feature provides a layer of anonymity, as users will be able to communicate without revealing their personal phone numbers. This is particularly beneficial for users who prioritize privacy and want to control their contact information. In addition, usernames for communication will simplify the connection process on WhatsApp. Users will be easily able to share their usernames, eliminating the need for explicit exchange of phone numbers. We think that this will be especially useful in situations where users may be hesitant to share their phone numbers but still want to establish connections within the app.
A feature to allow users to create a username is under development and it will be available in a future update of the web client. As always, we will share another article when we have further details about this feature.
