WhatsApp is developing Klipy integration for the iOS app
In the post about the WhatsApp for iOS 25.24.77 update, we announced a feature that expands the GIF keyboard layout from two to three columns. This feature gives users a larger view of GIFs when searching. Previously, WhatsApp displayed two columns when searching for GIFs. This limited view forced users to scroll through the GIF grid for longer until they found the right one to share. With one additional column, WhatsApp now displays 50% more GIFs, contributing to faster searches.
Now, WhatsApp is focusing on addressing a new critical issue with GIFs before it occurs in 5 months. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 26.2.10.70 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature that replaces Tenor with the Klipy GIF provider.

As you can see in this screenshot, WhatsApp is currently exploring the implementation of a feature that allows users to share GIFs from Klipy, scheduled for release in a future update. Klipy is a content platform that provides a large library of animated GIFs, memes, and stickers. Apps and services can integrate Klipy by using the official API to search GIFs. This integration will allow users to choose a GIF and share it using Klipy, just like they currently do with GIPHY and Tenor.
WhatsApp is not considering Klipy as a third-party GIF provider. Instead, WhatsApp will replace Tenor with Klipy. Tenor recently announced it will discontinue services offered through its official API on June 30, 2026. Tenor has already stopped accepting new requests and registrations, but the most significant change will occur at the end of June. This means WhatsApp users currently searching for GIFs through Tenor will no longer be able to use Tenor on July 1, 2026.
WhatsApp currently allows GIF searches through GIPHY and Tenor. Due to WhatsApp's established policies, some users can only search for GIFs from GIPHY, while all others can only search for GIFs from Tenor. When Tenor discontinues its service, WhatsApp will allow current Tenor users to search for GIFs using Klipy. The transition will be silent, so users won't need to do anything to migrate between the two services. These users will notice the transition between the two GIF providers is complete by the "Klipy" label appearing on new GIFs they send. Currently, there are no plans to migrate for GIPHY users, and nothing will change for them.
While WhatsApp could rely on GIPHY as its main GIF provider, this could cause some problems. It seems that WhatsApp prefers to maintain at least two GIF providers to quickly migrate users to the other one if a provider experiences persistent outages. As a result, the introduction of Klipy aims to be WhatsApp's second official GIF provider. It's worth noting that WhatsApp isn't the only app working on this migration. Other apps and services that use Tenor will also need to migrate their users to a different GIF provider, and Discord seems to have already started working on integrating Klipy as a GIF provider.
The feature that replaces Tenor with the Klipy GIF provider is under development, and it's expected to be available in a future update. Currently, it's unclear exactly when WhatsApp will begin migrating users who use Tenor as their GIF provider. This migration will likely occur before June 30, 2026. This deadline will allow affected users to continue sharing GIFs without interruption.
