PRIVATE WRITING HELP ASSISTANT
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.23.7 update, we announced that a feature to get message writing suggestions from Meta AI was available. This feature relies on Private Processing, an architecture developed to securely and anonymously handle user requests without storing any message data. The system ensures that all suggestions are generated in real time and vanish after delivery, leaving no trace. This allows WhatsApp to improve the messaging experience while maintaining complete user control over their data. It appears that WhatsApp now intends to offer iOS users the ability to generate message writing suggestions as it already does for the Android version, aiming to provide a consistent experience across both platforms. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.22.10.74 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out a Writing Help assistant feature powered by AI Private Processing!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, a limited number of users can explore a new capability designed to help refine messages quickly and securely before sending them. The tool is built on Meta's Private Processing system, which leverages encrypted communication and anonymous routing so that messages manually sent for AI enhancement cannot be tied back to a user's identity. This new technology generates multiple suggestions without storing the original message or any generated responses, ensuring that user data, messages, and requests stay fully private throughout the process.
When a user decides to improve a message, the Writing Help feature transmits it through this secure channel, where several alternative phrasings are created without retaining the original content or any generated options. Once the suggestions are delivered back to the device, no records are kept on Meta's or WhatsApp's servers. The Private Processing screen also highlights that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access their messages or AI-generated suggestions thanks to the system's robust privacy protections.
When Private Processing is enabled from the app settings, some users will notice that after typing a short phrase within the chat text input, the sticker icon in the chat bar is replaced with a pen symbol. This new icon indicates that the AI assistant is available to provide writing suggestions. Tapping it allows the user to instantly request improvements to structure, tone, or clarity, making it easier to craft polished and personalized messages before sending them.
If the user opts not to proceed, the text remains on their device and is never sent externally. Only when they actively choose to use the Writing Help feature, the message is securely packaged and transmitted for processing. Meta's system then analyzes the snippet, produces several alternative drafts, and returns them privately. This ensures that the entire process is fully controlled by the user and activated only with explicit consent.
The Writing Help assistant provides at least three variations aligned with one of five tone options selected by the user. These tones include the rephrase option, which refines structure and readability without altering meaning. Users can also choose to adapt the message language for formal or workplace communication by selecting the professional tone. Funny is also one of the alternative tones, which adds a touch of humor. Additionally, the supportive tone infuses empathy and encouragement, making it ideal for offering comfort, motivation, or positive reinforcement in personal and professional conversations. Finally, the proofread tone corrects grammar and spelling issues, ensuring the message is clear, polished, and free of errors before being sent. It's worth noting that WhatsApp may expand the range of tones in the future to give users even more flexibility.
After reviewing the AI-generated results, users can keep their original message or replace it with one of the suggested versions. If they decide to send an AI-enhanced message, the recipient will not be notified that writing assistance was used. A feedback option is also available to report whether the suggestion was useful or not, but this feedback contains no message content and includes only a satisfaction rating.
It's worth noting that all features powered by Private Processing are always disabled by default. Those wishing to use the AI assistant must enable it manually in the settings menu. Disabling it at any time will prevent the feature from appearing and ensure it isn't triggered accidentally while typing. In addition, WhatsApp will never modify messages automatically or send them to the Private Processing system without the user's action, and the decision to use an AI-generated suggestion always remains entirely with the user. The assistant also works exclusively on the single message entered into the chat text input for improvement, without scanning the rest of the conversation.
Similar to the Android version, Writing Help for iOS is currently being tested with a small group of users, allowing WhatsApp to monitor how it performs and understand early insights. This measured rollout gives the team time to address any issues and fine-tune the experience. It also ensures that the feature works reliably before reaching a wider audience. If testing proves successful and feedback is positive, WhatsApp may gradually expand access to the feature for a larger audience in the future.
A Writing Help assistant feature powered by AI Private Processing is available to some users who install the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and it's rolling out to more people over the coming weeks.
