HD VIDEOS – PROFILE ICONS
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.11.0.76 update, we announced a new feature available to some beta testers: HD photos. With this feature, users can easily share photos with better quality by preserving their dimensions. When a photo is sent by using this feature, a new tag is added to the message bubble, highlighting that it is a high-quality photo. Some users also noticed the same tag being applied to videos. However, this was an automated process with unknown details, and users had no control over this feature. After installing the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.13.0.76 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, some beta testers may now experiment with the ability to send high-quality videos!
As you can see in this screenshot, WhatsApp is really rolling out a feature to send high-quality videos to users that installed the latest update of the iOS app (as announced in the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.14.10 update), since the HD option now also appears when selecting a video from the Photos app. As we explained in our previous article where we announced the high-quality option for images, this option preserves video dimensions, but light compression is still applied to the video. This means that this option doesn’t allow users to share videos in their original quality, but we can assure you that the quality is really improved with this option. As happens with the high-quality photo feature, the default option is always “Standard quality” for any video, and you still need to select the high-quality option every time you want to share a new video with improved quality.
When users share a video using the high-quality option, it will be marked as a high-quality video in the conversation, and a new tag is automatically added to the message bubble, as shown in the attached screenshot. This additional information will help the recipient identify that the video was sent in better quality. It is important to mention that this feature is not available when sharing videos via status updates. However, the application still requires further updates as, despite the option being available for videos, the text has not yet been revised as it still refers to images. A future update should introduce the correct explanation for videos.
Note that the update also provides users with additional enhancements regarding profile icons within group chats. Specifically, the thumbnails of contacts whose profile pictures are hidden or unavailable have been revised. These thumbnails now feature the initials of the respective group member’s name. In our opinion, this improvement will help other participants in the conversation quickly identify the person represented by the thumbnail.
The feature to send high-quality videos, along with enhancements for profile icons within group chats, is available to some beta testers that install the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and it is rolling out to even more people over the coming days.
