ANIMATED EMOJIS

Last year, we shared an article where we announced that WhatsApp was working on an animated emojis feature, scheduled for release in a future update. Through this feature, users would have been able to enhance their messaging experience by sending dynamic and animated emojis that add a new layer of expression and fun to conversations. It appears that WhatsApp is now testing this feature with the public, as some users in the Android beta program can now share animated emojis in their conversations. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.15.15 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out an animated emojis feature!

As you can see from the attached video recording, a limited number of beta testers can explore animated emojis to enrich their daily communication experience. These animated emojis, designed using the Lottie library, will maintain high quality while being lightweight and scalable as they enhance the visual appeal of emoji messages without compromising performance. It's worth noting that WhatsApp has recently released an enhanced sticker experience with the Lottie framework, expanding support for Lottie-based stickers.

It's important to highlight that not all emojis support animation. While WhatsApp is introducing this feature to enhance messaging, only certain emojis have been designed with animations. This means that when you send an emoji, it will only appear animated if an animated version of that specific emoji is available. For emojis without an animated version, they will appear in their standard static form. To determine if the feature is enabled for your account, we recommend you try sending the emojis shown in our screen recording. However, WhatsApp might explore adding more animated emojis in the future, continuing to use the Lottie library for their design.

An animated emojis feature using Lottie is available to some beta testers who install the latest updates of WhatsApp beta for Android from the Google Play Store, and it is rolling out to even more people over the coming weeks.
