WhatsApp makes it easier for users to personalize their conversations

In the post about the WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.23.10.81 update, we announced a feature that lets users choose their favorite chat theme. This update allows users to enjoy the same experience also on the business app. With chat themes, users can customize the interface by selecting different colors and wallpapers for their conversations. This feature helps users make their chats more personal and visually distinct. It also improves accessibility, as it allows users to choose themes that are easier on the eyes.

Improved chat personalization across iOS, Android, and Web

Chat themes help users personalize the look of their conversations on iOS and Android. They make it easier to distinguish chats from one another by applying different colors and backgrounds. As a result, this feature has improved both the visual experience and overall usability for many people. Now, it seems that WhatsApp is finally planning to bring chat themes to the web client as well.

Chat themes are coming on WhatsApp Web

As you can see from the attached image, WhatsApp is developing a feature that will let users choose a default chat theme on the Web. Although this feature is currently under development and scheduled for released in the future, it already promises to improve the visual experience on the web client. At the moment, users can set a default wallpaper for their chats. They can also choose to add doodles to the wallpaper, which are patterned illustrations layered on top of the background. Aside from this, the customization of the chat interface has always been quite limited on WhatsApp Web.

How chat themes will work on the Web

In a future update, WhatsApp will improve chat customization on the web client by introducing themes. Chat themes are visual presets that let users change the appearance of their conversations by adjusting the message bubble color. The wallpaper will also adjust to complement the selected theme. This means that users will experience a more personalized and visually coordinated interface for their chats. Users will be able to choose their favorite theme right within the page settings.

Chat-level customization

WhatsApp will also let users customize the theme at a chat-level for added convenience. This means every conversation can have its own unique look, and it is separate from the global settings. So users will be able to choose different themes depending on the chat. This will make it easier for users to visually distinguish one conversation from others at a glance. It also gives more freedom to personalize chats based on context or preference. For example, a work chat could use a simple blue theme, while a group chat with friends could have an orange design.

Wide range of message color variations

WhatsApp is exploring a very large number of chat themes. There are 49 options in total, including the default theme. Some of these themes are very similar to others but differ slightly in color tone and intensity. This will allow users to choose between multiple shades of the same color instead of being limited to a single option. For example, there are several blue themes available. These include Default Blue, Default Blue Tonal, Default Blue Minimal, Sky Blue, Sky Blue Tonal, Royal Blue, and Royal Blue Tonal. Users might like Default Blue, but feel that it does not fully match their preference. In that case, they could find that Default Blue Tonal offers the perfect balance they were looking for.

Privacy of chat themes

When a chat theme is selected, it is not shared with other participants in the conversation. Only the user who chooses the theme can see it applied to their interface. This will ensure that customization remains a personal preference rather than something visible to everyone in the chat. Unlike Instagram, WhatsApp themes do not affect how the conversation appears to other participants. This means that the experience is private and limited to the device of the person who sets it.

Chat theme development and future rollout on WhatsApp Web

The chat theme feature is currently under development, and it is planned for release in a future update. WhatsApp is currently refining how chat themes are applied to conversations. Once testing is complete, WhatsApp will roll out this feature to some beta testers, making it easier for users to customize their chat interface.
