WhatsApp is working on wallpapers for voice calls
After announcing a new interface for voice calls, available in a future update, WhatsApp is working on other minor tweaks to improve the interface when placing voice calls.

WALLPAPERS FOR VOICE CALLS
WhatsApp is always working on bringing new features and improvements for the user interface. In this case, they are working on the ability to view the chat wallpaper when placing voice calls:
As you can see in this screenshot, WhatsApp shows up the chat wallpaper when you place a voice call. At the moment, WhatsApp does not show up the real chat wallpaper (since you can select different wallpapers for different chats) but WhatsApp always selects the default one. Note that, since this feature is under development, things may change before the release of the feature, so the call wallpaper may reflect the chat wallpaper in the future.
Even if this screenshot was taken on WhatsApp beta for iOS, you would expect to see the same feature to come on WhatsApp beta for Android as well: in this case, there is no news, unfortunately. Development time can be different, so who knows what can happen in the future.
