WhatsApp displays photos from address book when profile pictures are missing

In the post about the WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.21.10.74 update, we announced a feature to import profile photos from Facebook or Instagram. This feature enables users to choose whether they want to import their profile picture directly from one of these services. This option is integrated alongside other existing choices available when changing the profile photo in the app settings. With this feature, WhatsApp makes it easier for users to keep their profile picture up to date by quickly selecting an image from platforms they already use.

This month, WhatsApp continues its commitment to keeping profile photos updated. Specifically, WhatsApp has developed a feature designed to automatically sync profile photos when users have not set one. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 26.12.10.71 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out a feature to replace blank profiles with photos from the address book.

As you can see from the attached image, some beta testers can explore a feature that automatically displays photos from the address book when a contact has no profile picture. This means that even if a user has not set a profile picture, WhatsApp can use the saved image from the contact card. However, the feature only affects the view on the user's device and does not change the contact's actual profile photo. Additionally, only contacts that the user has allowed WhatsApp to access will have the profile photo updated. With this feature, users can quickly identify contacts without a profile photo by more than just their name.

There are two cases where WhatsApp uses the profile photo saved in the address book. The first case is for your own profile. For example, if you don't have a profile picture, WhatsApp will show your contact card photo in the app settings. But other users will not see this photo. Your photo you saved in your address book is only used to avoid showing an empty profile to yourself. If you don't have a profile photo and they don't have one saved in their address book, others will continue to see the default placeholder.

The second case is when other users cannot see your profile picture. In this case, WhatsApp will display the photo they have saved in their address book, if one exists. For example, if your privacy settings are set on "Nobody" or "My contacts except", some people may not be able to see your profile picture. However, if they have your profile photo saved in your address book, WhatsApp will show that image instead on their own device. This will let them recognize you in their chats even when your privacy settings won't allow them to see your profile photo. So if your privacy settings prevent someone from seeing your profile photo, they will be able to see the photo they have manually saved for you in their address book.

This feature will be especially useful for contacts who prefer not to set a profile picture. For example, if you choose not to add a profile photo, others can still display one by updating your contact card in their address book. When a photo is available in the address book, it will appear in individual chats. It will also show up in common group chats. So your contacts will be able to see a picture even if you haven't uploaded one. If you upload a profile photo on WhatsApp and your privacy settings allow others to see it, they will no longer see the photo from their address book but the one you set. As a result, this feature will make communication more personal without requiring everyone to set a profile photo.

The feature to replace blank profiles with photos from the address book is available to some beta testers who install the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS update from TestFlight. Note that some users who install the latest WhatsApp update from the App Store may also explore the same feature. This means that WhatsApp aims to receive feedback from a larger audience beyond beta testers.
