SHARE TOPICS - STATUS UPDATES

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.23.10.73 update, we announced that a sticker feature to introduce prompts through status updates was under development. This feature would allow users to add an "Add Yours" sticker when posting a status, enabling them to set a theme, question, or activity for others to respond to by sharing their own status updates. The feature encourages a chain of responses while maintaining privacy for the user who started the chain, as their identity won't be visible to others who join or view the prompt. It appears that WhatsApp is now testing this feature with some users on the iOS app, as they have reported seeing the new content sticker before sharing their images and videos. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp for iOS 25.14.77 update, which is available on the App Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out a feature to create and share topics for status updates!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, some users can access a content sticker designed to initiate interactive chains of content privately. This new sticker allows users to post a status update with a prompt, such as a question, a theme, or a challenge, and encourage others to respond by creating their own status with the same sticker. For example, someone might post "Add yours: your favorite sunset photo" and friends who view the status can tap the sticker and add their own sunset image in response. Each participant in the chain contributes their own update inspired by the original prompt, helping to create a fun and spontaneous thread of updates.

This feature is only available when attempting to share a status update, because its purpose is tightly linked to how status works on WhatsApp. Privacy is a key part of this new feature, as even though many people might participate in the same chain, no one will be able to see who originally started it. Similarly, users cannot see who else has taken part in the chain, since each status is shared independently and only visible to the specific audience the user has selected. In other words, if you tap on an "Add Yours" sticker and contribute your own status update, your contacts will only see your version, not the other responses in the chain.

The system is designed this way to preserve the commitment to privacy and end-to-end encryption. This means that no one, not even WhatsApp, can access the content of the status updates or identify who started or participated in the interactive chain. There is no central view where all the responses to a specific sticker are shown, and there is no way to trace a response back to the original creator. The identity of the person who launched the prompt remains completely anonymous, unless they are part of your contact list and have chosen to share their status with you. This ensures a sense of safety and discretion, encouraging more users to participate without worrying about being publicly associated with a chain.

A feature to create and share topics for status updates is available to some users who install the latest versions of WhatsApp for iOS from the App Store, and it's rolling out to more people over the coming weeks.
