HOME SCREEN CHAT NOTIFICATIONS

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.20.17 update, we announced that a feature to manage the home screen badge count was available to some beta testers. This update provides users with more control over how their home screen badge behaves, allowing them to choose between two options for clearing the badge count. It appears that WhatsApp now intends to offer iOS users the same control over the app badge as it already does for the Android version, aiming to provide a consistent experience across both platforms. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.3.10.76 update, which is available on TestFlight, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out a feature to manage home screen chat notifications!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, some beta testers can explore a feature that allows users to determine how their home screen badge updates. Specifically, WhatsApp now provides an option to either reset the badge count every time the app is opened or keep it unchanged. This means that if a user has five unread messages, the badge will display the number 5. However, if the user opens WhatsApp without reading any of those messages, the badge will still disappear upon closing the app. This happens because the badge will now only count new messages received since the last time WhatsApp was opened. Essentially, this feature ensures that users are only alerted to new unread messages through the app badge and not older ones that have already been acknowledged.

On the other hand, for those who prefer to keep track of all unread messages, WhatsApp offers the option to keep the badge count active even after opening the app. Users who want the badge to persist until every unread message is opened simply need to leave this new option disabled. This update is particularly useful for users who receive a high volume of messages and want to manage notifications more efficiently. By allowing customization, WhatsApp gives users the flexibility to choose whether they want a fresh start every time they open the app or if they prefer to maintain an ongoing count of unread messages.

Additionally, WhatsApp is introducing another feature within the Chats tab that allows users to mark all conversations as read with a single action. This will help users quickly clear notifications without having to open each chat individually. It's worth mentioning that this feature was already released with the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.20.19 update and it's now available on the iOS app as well, ensuring a consistent experience across different platforms. This feature is particularly useful for those who receive a high volume of messages and want to manage their inbox cleaner. By providing a simple way to dismiss unread message indicators, WhatsApp aims to enhance the user experience and reduce notification clutter within the chats tab.

It's important to note that these features may have already appeared for some users in the past few weeks, including those on the stable release from the App Store. However, for reasons that remain unclear, WhatsApp decided to disable them shortly after their initial release. Now, it seems that WhatsApp is gradually reintroducing these features, making them available to more beta testers, or even to other users on the stable version. This may suggest that WhatsApp is getting ready to roll them out to a wider audience soon, as WhatsApp typically tests features with a smaller group before making them broadly available.

A feature to manage home screen chat notifications is available to some beta testers who install the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and it's rolling out to more people over the coming days.
