GROUP INVITE LINK AND QR CODE

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.23.5 update, we announced that a feature to manage the visibility of the group invite link was available. This feature allows group admins to decide whether the invite link and its associated QR code can be viewed by all members or only by admins. This option would give admins greater flexibility in managing group access while maintaining control over privacy and security. It appears that WhatsApp now intends to offer iOS users the ability to manage the group invite link as it already does for the Android version, aiming to provide a consistent experience across both platforms. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.22.10.73 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out a feature to choose who can access the group invite link!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, some beta testers can explore a new feature that lets group admins decide if the invite link and QR code should be visible to all members or remain restricted to admins only. This change eliminates the need for members to request the link from an admin each time they want to invite someone. By making the invite link visible to all members, admins can facilitate faster group growth during events, campaigns, or other time-sensitive activities.

This feature is available within the group permissions screen, where it is turned off by default. This ensures that the privacy policy for the group remains intact unless admins choose otherwise. When enabled, any member can easily access and share the link or QR code directly from the group information page. Here, any group member will be able to see the group invite link, copy it to their clipboard and send it to others using their preferred communication channels. This flexibility can be especially useful for large community groups, study circles, or volunteer organizations where frequent new member additions are expected.

This feature not only applies to the group invite link but also extends to the QR code associated with it. When the option is enabled, all group members can view, share, and scan the QR code directly from the group info screen. This allows for quick and seamless joining without manually copying or sending the link, as the QR code can be scanned instantly from another device to gain access to the group.

It's worth noting that group admins retain full control to disable the setting at any moment if they decide to restrict access again. Upon disabling the feature, WhatsApp will automatically reset the group invite link, making any previously shared links unusable. This safeguard ensures that only trusted users can rejoin the group after the setting has been turned off. The link reset process generates a brand-new link, which will once again be exclusive to admins. This approach helps maintain security by preventing unauthorized users from joining through old links.

A feature to choose who can access the group invite link is available to some beta testers who install the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and it's rolling out to more people over the coming weeks.
