IOS SUPPORT UPDATE
A month ago, we shared an article about the upcoming end of support for older iOS versions and iPhone models. Through a new in-app alert, WhatsApp has announced that starting May 5, 2025, the app will no longer support iOS versions earlier than 15.1. This decision impacts both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business, as the company is committed to optimizing the service by leveraging the latest advancements in iOS technology. With the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.2.10.72 update, which is available on TestFlight, we observed that WhatsApp has already discontinued support for older iOS versions and certain iPhone models.

As you can see from the attached screenshot, users running iOS versions earlier than 15.1 are now unable to install the latest beta versions, as the app explicitly requires iOS 15.1 or newer. This means that affected users cannot update to the most recent beta build and will have to continue using the previous version. However, users who remain on the older beta version will only be able to use it for about a month. Since WhatsApp beta builds have an expiration date, users running the outdated version will eventually lose access to the app once the beta expires. After this, the only option left will be to install the version available on the App Store, as the stable version has a much longer availability period compared to beta versions and will remain accessible for a considerably longer time. It's worth mentioning that users who switch to the App Store version will not lose their data during this transition, as WhatsApp automatically retains chat history, settings, and other data, as long as the app remains installed on the device.
Based on the details provided in the in-app alert previously shared, the App Store version is expected to expire in the early days of May 2025, coinciding with the official end of support for iOS versions earlier than 15.1. At that point, users still running outdated iOS versions will no longer be able to use WhatsApp at all. If you are unsure whether your device is affected, check your iPhone's iOS version by navigating to Settings > General > About and looking for the "Software Version". If your device is running iOS 14 or earlier, you must consider your upgrade options now to ensure uninterrupted access to WhatsApp. If the device cannot be updated to newer iOS versions than iOS 15.1, users may need to consider upgrading to a newer iPhone model that supports the latest software.
It is very important to back up your chat history on iCloud before transitioning to a new device or updating your current one. Doing so ensures that you can easily restore your data on the updated app or a new device. While this change may be inconvenient for some users, discontinuing support for older iOS versions can enhance performance and enable new features that are only possible on more modern operating systems. This approach allows WhatsApp to focus its resources on improving the experience for the majority of users who are already using devices and systems capable of supporting the latest innovations.
Effective May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support iOS versions earlier than 15.1, which also includes devices like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. This change will impact both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business, so users are advised to update to iOS 15.1 or newer, or upgrade to a compatible device, to continue using the app.
