PRIVATE MESSAGE SUMMARIES

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.18.18 update, we announced that an AI-powered feature to privately summarize messages in chats and groups is available. This feature leverages Meta AI through a system called Private Processing, which enables users to generate concise summaries of their unread messages without compromising their privacy. This optional feature works across both individual and group conversations, helping users stay informed more efficiently, especially in busy chats. It appears that WhatsApp now intends to offer iOS users the same summarization functionality as it already does for the Android version, aiming to provide a consistent experience across both platforms. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.18.10.74 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out an AI-powered feature that allows users to generate private message summaries in their chats and groups!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, some beta testers can explore a new feature that let them get a summary of new incoming messages directly from the conversation interface. This new AI-powered functionality relies on Private Processing, a privacy-focused system developed to ensure that user data remains secure at all times. Private Processing allows summaries to be generated without storing any of the message content or associating it with the user's identity. All requests are handled through encrypted and anonymous routes, ensuring full confidentiality. The summary is processed entirely within a protected environment, so no one, including WhatsApp or Meta, can access or view the data.

When Private Processing is enabled by navigating to Settings > Chats > Private Processing, the app will automatically show a new button to summarize messages once the user receives at least 3 new messages in a conversation. This button appears just above the message thread and reflects the number of unread messages. If the user taps this button, a private request is securely sent to the Private Processing architecture. The system then generates a concise, AI-powered summary and returns it to the user, without storing any message content or keeping records of the request.

This feature is especially helpful in chats where users often receive a high volume of messages, such as group chats or community group chats. In these scenarios, users may find it difficult to catch up on all the activity, especially if they have been away from the app for some time. Instead of scrolling through dozens of messages, users can simply request a summary and quickly grasp the main points of the conversation.

It is important to note that this feature is entirely optional. Users who prefer not to use message summaries can simply choose not to tap the button to generate them, or they can disable the functionality altogether from the app settings. Additionally, the message summarization feature is not available in chats where Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled. This limitation is not due to concerns about the privacy guarantees of Private Processing, since the system is already designed with strong privacy protections, but rather to respect user preferences. When Advanced Chat Privacy is turned on, it means the user has chosen to avoid any kind of AI-powered features in that chat, regardless of how secure the underlying system may be.

The message summarization feature is the first feature WhatsApp is releasing that uses the Private Processing system. It's the initial example of how WhatsApp is using this new privacy-focused AI infrastructure. However, there are also signs that Writing Help may be another upcoming feature, which hasn't been released yet but may come soon. Through Writing Help, users will be able to change the tone of their message to match the context, making it more formal, friendly, or professional. Just like message summaries, Writing Help would run entirely within the secure Private Processing environment, keeping all user data private and ensuring that no information is stored or exposed at any point in the process.

A feature that allows users to generate private message summaries in their chats and groups is available to some beta testers who install the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and it's rolling out to more people over the coming weeks.
