TAG FOR GROUP CHAT MEMBERS
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.17.42 update, we announced that a feature to assign a tag to group chat members was under development. This feature will allow users to add custom tags to their profiles within a specific group, making it easier for group members to identify who to contact for particular matters. Users will be able to set a tag directly from the group chat info screen by selecting their name in the members list and adding a relevant tag. It appears that WhatsApp now intends to bring the same group tag functionality to iOS users in the future, ensuring a consistent experience across both platforms. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.18.10.70 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature to assign a tag to group chat members!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature that will allow users to clearly identify their roles in a group through personalized tags, scheduled for release in a future update. A tag is a short label that will appear next to a user's name in the group, such as "Team Leader", "Coordinator", or "Moderator". It will provide immediate context about what that person does or what they are responsible for within that group. This will help streamline communication by making it easier for all group members to know who to reach out to for specific topics.
Initially, WhatsApp is developing this feature so that only group admins can assign tags to other members. This gives admins control over group structure and ensures that the assigned roles are accurate and relevant. The tags assigned by admins will remain consistent and visible within the group, helping to maintain clarity even in large or highly active chats. These tags will be persistent, as even if a user reinstalls WhatsApp or switches devices, their assigned tag within a group will not be lost. This will ensure continuity while avoiding the need to manually reassign roles.
WhatsApp is also working on expanding this functionality to make it more flexible in the future. Specifically, admins will be able to to enable a setting that lets any group member assign their own tag, rather than restricting this ability to admins only. This can be particularly helpful in collaborative environments where self-identification is useful. However, if an admin later disables the ability for group members to assign tags, all tags created by members will be permanently removed. In such cases, users will not be able to recover previously assigned tags unless they are manually added again by an admin.
A feature to assign a tag to group chat members is under development and it will be available in a future update of the app. We will keep you updated on any further developments about this feature until it's officially released.
