ADVANCED CHAT PRIVACY
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.10.14 update, we announced that an advanced chat privacy feature to limit message sharing was under development. This new feature is designed to give users greater control over their conversations by disabling automatic media downloads to the device gallery and restricting the ability to export entire chat histories outside the app in the future. This would add a new layer of privacy and security to chats, ensuring that sensitive content stays within the app and giving users greater confidence that their conversations won't be easily shared or stored without their consent. It appears that WhatsApp now intends to bring the same experience with chat privacy to iOS users in the future, ensuring a consistent experience across both platforms. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.10.10.70 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on an advanced chat privacy feature to limit message sharing!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature that will introduce a new privacy option directly within the chat info screen. This option will allow users to activate an advanced level of privacy for both individual and group chats. Once enabled, it will prevent anyone in the conversation from automatically saving received images and videos to their device's gallery. This behavior already applies to chats with disappearing messages, and WhatsApp now plans to extend it to any conversation where this privacy setting will be turned on.
In addition to limiting media saving, the feature will also block the ability to export the entire chat history, preventing users from transferring chats outside the app. This ensures that sensitive conversations are kept securely within the WhatsApp ecosystem, where they are subject to the built-in privacy protections of the app. By restricting the export feature, WhatsApp aims to reduce the risk of unauthorized data sharing, accidental leaks, or archiving of private messages outside the secure environment of the app. Additionally, all interactions with Meta AI within the conversation are entirely disabled when advanced chat privacy is enabled.
This feature will be beneficial for users who want to make sure that their conversations are not shared, saved, or archived without their knowledge. It helps protect sensitive content such as personal photos, private discussions, or confidential group conversations. While users will still be able to forward individual messages to maintain usability, the purpose of this feature is not to block single messages from being shared, but to prevent entire conversations from being easily exported or saved outside the app. For this reason, WhatsApp has decided not to introduce screenshot detection for chats. Even if screenshot detection were implemented, users could still bypass it through methods like using WhatsApp Web, where web clients do not offer certain privacy protections available on mobile apps.
The advanced chat privacy setting will be entirely optional and can be managed on a per-chat basis. Any participant in the conversation will be able to enable or disable it, depending on their preferences. However, when the privacy setting is changed, a system notification will be automatically posted in the chat to inform all participants. This ensures transparency and lets everyone know when the privacy level has been altered. As the feature is still in development, additional enhancements may be introduced before the public rollout based on further testing.
An advanced chat privacy feature to limit message sharing is under development and it will be available in a future update of the app. We will keep you updated on any further developments about this feature until it's officially released.
