Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.1.10.73 update, which is available on TestFlight, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out a feature to share music through status updates!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, some beta testers can now experiment with a new feature that allows them to add music to their status updates. This release aligns with what we previously anticipated on X following a statement from Universal Music Group announcing their expanded agreement with Meta. As part of this partnership, WhatsApp users gain access to a music catalog, the same one already available on Instagram, allowing them to browse and select tracks to enhance their status updates. Users can add music to both photos and videos in their status updates. When music is added to a photo, it is converted into a video that lasts for 15 seconds. For video-based status updates, the music duration is limited by the length of the video.

The feature allows users search for specific songs or artists directly from the drawing editor, providing an enhanced way to integrate their favorite tracks into their updates. An active Internet connection is obviously required to browse the music catalog and stream the selected audio tracks for inclusion in status updates. If the Internet connection is unavailable, an error message will appear, prompting users to reconnect before proceeding. This enhancement adds a new level of personalization to status updates, enabling users to set a mood or share moments with a fitting soundtrack. In addition, the ability to integrate music introduces an added layer of interactivity, as contacts can engage with the update by enjoying the music and potentially discovering new tracks and artists by opening their Instagram profiles directly from WhatsApp.

It's worth noting that the option to add audio clips to status updates on WhatsApp is similar to a feature already available on Instagram, making the two platforms more consistent with each other. This alignment helps meet user expectations, as people are already familiar with the music feature on Instagram. Additionally, while some beta testers can currently use the music feature for status updates in the latest beta version of WhatsApp, it may also be available to a small group of users in the stable version, though it is not yet widely accessible to all users.
