DISABLE LINK PREVIEWS

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.8.11 update, we announced a new feature available to some beta testers: the ability to disable link previews. This feature is designed to enhance user privacy by giving users more control over whether or not links sent in their chats are automatically previewed, preventing third-party websites from tracking these interactions. Initially spotted with the WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.7.10.70 update, it seems that WhatsApp is now bringing the same privacy feature to the iOS app as well, as discovered in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.7.10.76 update from the TestFlight app.

As you can see in the attached screenshot, some beta testers can now experiment with a new privacy setting to disable link previews after installing the latest update. By enabling this feature, users can now protect their IP address from being inferred by third-party websites, as previews for the links they share in chats will no longer be generated. It's important to note that disabling link previews works only for the user who opts for it. Other participants in the conversation will still be able to generate rich link previews for their links unless they choose to disable this feature as well.

The introduction of this feature is a substantial enhancement for the user experience, as it allows users to disable link previews to safeguard their IP addresses from potential inference by third-party websites. By disabling link previews, WhatsApp users can protect user privacy more effectively. Link previews often contain metadata such as IP addresses, that can be by third-party websites to track users' online activities. With this feature enabled, users can finally prevent their IP addresses from being inferred by these external sources, reducing the risk of tracking and invasion of privacy.

The privacy feature to disable link previews is available to some beta testers that install the latest update of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and it is rolling out to even more people over the coming days.
