PICTURE-IN-PICTURE
In the article about the WhatsApp for iOS 24.6.77 update, we announced that WhatsApp was rolling out a feature to skip forward and backward videos. This feature was designed to offer users a tool to quickly forward and rewind videos by double tapping the edge of a video, enhancing navigation and providing greater control over video playback. It appears that WhatsApp is now exploring additional features to further enhance the video viewing experience, such as improving multitasking while watching videos. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.7.10.73 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is now working on a picture-in-picture feature for videos!

As you can see in the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is currently in the process of introducing the ability to watch videos while navigating through different chats or sections of the app, set to release for a future update of the app. While picture-in-picture functionality is already available when watching YouTube and Instagram videos shared on WhatsApp, it is currently unavailable for videos shared directly within the app. This upcoming feature will enhance the user experience by allowing the picture-in-picture mode while enjoying video content shared among contacts.
It is important to note that the current version of the picture-in-picture feature in development will allow users to watch videos within the app itself. However, it does not extend this functionality to when users switch to a different app. Despite this limitation, an improved version of the picture-in-picture feature may be released in the future to address this particular aspect, allowing users to watch videos in picture-in-picture mode even when switching to a different app.
We believe that this feature could potentially enhance the user experience as it will allow users to continue watching videos in picture-in-picture mode even when they need to reply to a message. By introducing the picture-in-picture feature, WhatsApp aims to further elevate user convenience, ensuring that everyone can enjoy uninterrupted video playback regardless of their activity within the app. We believe that the capability to use the picture-in-picture mode while staying focused on ongoing conversations will also enhance multitasking, enabling users to manage their interactions within the app while engaging with video playback.
A picture-in-picture feature for videos is under development and it will be available in a future update of the app. As always, we will keep providing updates on any further developments regarding this feature until its release.
