WhatsApp explores secure summaries of multiple unread conversations
In the post about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.21.12 update, we announced a feature to generate quick recaps. This feature will let users generate summaries after selecting any unread chats. The summary allows users to stay updated on multiple conversations without reading every message. It will be particularly useful for very active group chats, where catching up can take a significant amount of time.
Note that this feature is still under development. WhatsApp is committed to enhancing how users can elaborate more detailed summaries. Ahead of the official launch, WhatsApp is refining the feature to make it clearer how users can request a summary. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.12.10 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature that lets users summarize multiple unread chats.

As you can see from the attached image, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature designed to generate a summary of unread chats. While this feature is currently under development and scheduled for release in the future, it already aims to make it easier for users to quickly catch up on conversations without having to read every message. Last year, WhatsApp launched AI-powered summaries. This feature allows users to securely get a concise overview of what they have missed in their chats.
Message summaries rely on Private Processing. Private Processing is a secure technology developed by Meta. It enables WhatsApp's AI features to process data in a private environment where no one, not even Meta or WhatsApp, can access the original messages or the summaries. Private Processing has been audited by NCC Group and Trail of Bits to confirm that its confidential computing architecture and implementation meet strong privacy and security standards for the message summarization service, and more. Additionally, they helped Meta identify areas for improvement and enhance the system integrity.
Private Processing allows WhatsApp to implement several AI-powered features without compromising user privacy. That's why WhatsApp can develop new features that help users summarize and manage their chats securely. Since WhatsApp has already implemented a private summarization system, WhatsApp plans now to extend the functionality by enabling users to generate summaries for multiple unread chats at once. In our previous article, we mentioned that WhatsApp planned to introduce a feature to get a quick recap of unread chats right within the overflow menu.
In a future update, WhatsApp will make it clearer for users how to generate summaries of their unread conversations. When users open the list of their unread chats by selecting the dedicated filter, they will find the option to get a summary. If users choose to generate a summary, WhatsApp will share only the most recent messages from those chats with Private Processing. Then, Private Processing will create the summary in a secure environment where neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access the content.
It's important to note that this feature will be optional. This means that it's up to users if they want to generate a summary, as they have to manually request it. Additionally, Private Processing is disabled by default. So users will have to manually enable it within the app settings if they want to experiment with AI-powered chat summaries. This will include generating overviews of multiple unread conversations.
The feature that lets users summarize multiple unread chats is currently under development, and it is planned for release in a future update. At the moment, WhatsApp is refining how summaries of multiple chats are processes. Once testing is complete, WhatsApp will release this feature to some beta testers, making it faster and easier for users to catch up on their conversations.
