WhatsApp is working on thinking mode for Meta AI
In the post about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.23.24 update, we announced a feature that adds a Meta AI shortcut to the message options. This feature allows users to quickly ask Meta AI questions about specific messages. Instead of forwarding the message to Meta AI manually, users can use this option to send the message to Meta AI while providing an additional prompt before confirming the request. This convenience enhances the interaction process, making it faster for users to get information and insights without performing extra steps.
While other AIs continue to evolve and implement new innovative tools, Meta AI has been relatively quiet for a while, with no major developments shared with the public. But now, it seems Meta wants to start introducing improvements aimed at improving the user experience. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.3.10 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature that enables reasoning capabilities for Meta AI.
As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is working to support the new thinking mode for Meta AI, scheduled for release in a future update. This menu will offers two main options, fast and thinking, making it simpler to users to select the response style. Depending on their needs and the prompt they enter, users can switch between modes at any time.
The fast mode is particularly designed for speed, providing quick responses to simple questions and prompts. This mode is minimal delay, even if the answer is brief or less detailed. It's worth mentioning that this is the default mode that all users are currently using when asking Meta AI something.
Meta is now planning to offer thinking mode directly in the conversation with the chatbot on WhatsApp. The thinking mode is built for deeper reasoning. When this mode is enabled, Meta AI takes more time to process the request so it can analyze context, break down complex problems, and produce more accurate or structured answers. Users can decide to select this mode when they work on complex tasks such as problem solving, multi step questions, summarization, comparisons, or planning. With the introduction of thinking mode, Meta AI will finally align with other AI assistants that already support advanced reasoning capabilities.
It's important to note that users will have full control over which mode to use at any time. Users will be able to switch between these two modes by tapping the AI mode selector button in the chat bar. Specifically, users will be able to move from fast mode to thinking mode by tapping the thunder icon. Once thinking mode is enabled, the icon will change to a light bulb, indicating that enhanced reasoning is active. To return to fast mode, users can simply tap the light bulb icon again. As Meta continues to work on improving the chatbot, additional options may be added to this new menu in the coming months.
The feature that enables reasoning capabilities for Meta AI is currently under development, and it is planned for release in a future update. WhatsApp is currently improving mode selection interactions with Meta AI. When this feature becomes available, it will allow users to get much more elaborate responses than the default mode.
