Specifically, WhatsApp is ensuring that all translations will occur locally on the user's device through language packs, eliminating the need to send data to external servers. While this feature is still in development, WhatsApp continues to refine it in order to improve the accuracy of language detection before the official release. Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.4.5 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature to automatically detect message language for translation!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a new feature that will help the app automatically identify the message language in chats and channels, scheduled for release in a future update. Currently, without this feature, users would have been required to specify the language of the conversation for accurate translation. However, with this feature, WhatsApp plans to make the process entirely automatic. This will make the translation process smoother, allowing users to communicate more effortlessly across languages. Instead of manually setting the translation language, users will be able to let WhatsApp detect it automatically, ensuring that all messages are translated, regardless of their original language.

To enable automatic language detection, users will need to download a specific language pack. This ensures that the language detection process happens locally on the device, preserving the privacy and security of the messages. With the language pack in place, users won't need an Internet connection to perform translations, as everything is processed offline. The decision to perform translations locally guarantees that no data will be sent to external servers, preserving message privacy and maintaining end-to-end encryption.

As previously announced, the language packs will offer the flexibility to delete them at any time through the WhatsApp storage settings. If users need to translate messages in other languages in the future, they can simply re-download the necessary language pack. This now includes the automatic language detection model, ensuring that both translation and language identification remain available whenever needed. This will offer a high level of convenience and customization, as users can manage their downloaded packs based on their preferences and needs.

This feature will be particularly useful in group chats, where multiple users may send messages in different languages. Instead of having to choose a specific language for translation, users will benefit from automatic language detection, which simplifies the process. In such scenarios, it can be difficult to follow the conversation and understand messages without translations, but with this feature, WhatsApp will make communication really smoother, regardless of the languages being used in the group.
