MUTE EVERYONE MENTIONS

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.26.3 update, we announced that a feature that allows users to mention everyone in group chats is currently under development. This feature introduces a new "everyone" option inside the mention menu, enabling members to notify all participants in the chat with a single tag. Instead of mentioning each user individually, one mention will trigger a notification for the entire group, making it easier to share important updates, reminders, or announcements without leaving anyone out. While still in testing, WhatsApp appears committed to refining the feature by giving users more control over how mentions work. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.27.1 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature that allows users to mute everyone mentions in group chats!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is testing the implementation of a feature to let users suppress everyone mentions, scheduled for release in a future update. In our previous coverage, we explained that the initial design of the feature made it possible for any participant in a group to use the everyone mention. This meant that not only group admins, but also regular members, could send a notification to all participants with a single tag.

Such an approach will undoubtedly add a layer of convenience, as there are scenarios in which even non-admin members may need to alert the entire group. For example, a student in a study group might want to remind everyone about an exam deadline, or a colleague could quickly notify all team members about a last-minute change. This confirms that the feature is also intended to address everyday needs rather than being limited only to administrative purposes.

However, this flexibility also raised potential concerns about misuse. Some participants might overuse or abuse the everyone mention, sending repeated alerts that could quickly become disruptive. In that context, we highlighted how group admins would be responsible for moderating and guiding members in using the feature appropriately. Without restrictions, admins would be responsible for preventing misuse of the feature and avoiding unnecessary distractions.

With the latest beta update, WhatsApp is addressing these concerns in a new way by developing an additional control that will allow users to manage notifications for everyone mentions. This means that if a group is muted, users will also be able to suppress notifications triggered by these special mentions. At the same time, WhatsApp acknowledges that not all users share the same needs. Some people may prefer to continue receiving everyone mentions even when the group itself is muted, especially when these alerts contain critical information. Others, however, may prefer to eliminate every possible distraction, ensuring that no type of group notification can interrupt them.

By introducing this option, WhatsApp strikes a balance between convenience and user autonomy. The feature will empower group members to decide whether they want to prioritize group-wide announcements or silence them completely. It will also help reduce potential frustration that may arise from frequent or unnecessary everyone mentions. As a result, this new option will give users an additional layer of personalization, allowing them to adapt their experience according to their communication style.

A feature that allows users to mute everyone mentions in group chats is under development and it will be available in a future update. We will keep you updated with an additional article as soon as we have more details to share about this feature.
