FORWARD INTERFACE WITH CHECKBOXES
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.22.18.8 update, we announced that a feature to forward messages and media to Meta AI was available. This functionality is located within the forward picker screen, where users can now select Meta AI as a recipient alongside their existing chats and groups. After selecting Meta AI, forwarded messages and media are sent directly to the chatbot, allowing users to interact with it immediately. Users can also include optional notes to provide context, making it easier for Meta AI to understand and respond accurately to the forwarded content. With the latest updates, WhatsApp is revising the same forward picker screen where Meta AI was added, aiming to improve its clarity and make the forwarding process more intuitive. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.24.8 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out a feature that introduces checkboxes to the forward picker interface!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, some beta testers can explore checkboxes in the forward picker interface. This new design aims to make the process of selecting contacts and groups more intuitive, especially for new users who are just getting familiar with WhatsApp. Previously, the forward picker screen did not include any checkboxes, which could leave some new users momentarily confused about how to select multiple recipients. With these checkboxes, new users can now immediately understand how to mark the contacts and groups they want to forward messages or media to.
Currently, WhatsApp is experimenting with two different configurations for these checkboxes. The first configuration features round checkboxes, which appear as small circles next to each contact or group. When tapped, these round checkboxes fill in to indicate selection, offering a familiar design that aligns with other circular UI elements. The second configuration features square checkboxes, which are slightly larger and have a sharper, more angular look. These square checkboxes also highlight when selected, providing a clear and bold visual cue for users who prefer a more defined selection indicator.
At this stage, it is not yet known which design will be adopted as the final version for all users. WhatsApp is likely testing both configurations simultaneously with different beta testers to collect feedback and observe usability patterns. As a result, some users currently see round checkboxes, while others see square ones. This split probably allows WhatsApp to compare how intuitive each option is for both new and experienced users.
The introduction of checkboxes is expected to significantly reduce hesitation during the forwarding process, as users no longer need to pause or guess how to select multiple recipients. This visual guidance makes the workflow faster, particularly for new users who are still learning the interface. By clearly indicating which contacts or groups have been selected, it also helps prevent errors and ensures that forwarded content reaches the intended recipients accurately.
A feature that introduces checkboxes to the forward picker interface is available to some beta testers who install the latest updates of WhatsApp beta for Android from the Google Play Store, and it is rolling out to even more people over the coming weeks.
