USERNAME SEARCH AND CONNECT
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.17.10.70 update, we announced that a feature to choose a username for phone number privacy is currently under development. This feature will allow users to create a unique identifier, making it possible for others to find and contact them without needing to share their phone number directly. However, there will be a few limitations: usernames need to be unique, have a certain length, include at least one letter, and follow specific formatting rules to avoid confusion or impersonation. These safeguards will ensure usernames remain clear, consistent, and secure. It appears that WhatsApp is now focusing on developing a username search functionality, so users will be able to easily look up and connect with others using their chosen usernames. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.24.22 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature that lets people discover and connect with others by searching for their usernames!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature that will allow users to search for other people through their usernames, scheduled for release in a future update. Using the floating action button in the Chats tab, users will be able to open the list of their contacts and groups. From here, they can type a username into the search bar, and WhatsApp will look through its systems to find the account, even if it isn't in their current contacts. If a matching account is found, it will appear in the search results. Depending on the user's privacy settings, WhatsApp may also display their profile picture. In particular, if the profile photo is set to "Everyone", it will be visible to anyone searching for that account.
Once the search returns results, it's possible to start a chat directly without needing the user's phone number. All chats initiated this way will remain fully end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that messages and calls are private and secure between these users. Users will also have access to the same features as regular chats, including sending media, voice messages, and documents. The chat will appear in the same Chats tab alongside existing conversations, making it easier for users to manage and follow. This approach will allow people to connect safely using usernames while maintaining the same level of privacy and security WhatsApp offers for all messages.
It is important to mention that it will not be possible to hide an account from search results, as the primary purpose of usernames is to allow discoverability and enable people to be contacted without sharing their phone number. Users who want a username but are worried about unwanted messages can activate an optional username key, which acts as a passcode for first-time messages. If the username key is activated, and the person trying to send a message does not know it, they will not be able to initiate communication. This provides an additional layer of privacy and security for those who want more control over who can contact them.
The search process will work globally, allowing users to locate usernames outside of their personal contacts, including people in other countries. It's worth noting that the username system will be optional, so users can continue using WhatsApp with just a phone number if they prefer. However, for those who choose to set a username, it will simplify having a connection with friends, colleagues, or new people without sharing the phone number. WhatsApp is also implementing spam protections to prevent abuse of the username system. For example, if the system detects suspicious behavior, such as repeatedly messaging multiple username contacts and receiving reports, existing Terms of Service will be enforced. Accounts engaging in spam or other abusive activities may face restrictions or penalties, ensuring the platform remains safe for all users.
A feature that lets people discover and connect with others by searching for their usernames is under development and it will be available in a future update. We will keep you updated with an additional article as soon as we have more details to share about this feature.
