QUICK CHAT RECAPS
In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.19.14 update, we announced that WhatsApp introduced private AI message summaries to catch up on chats faster. This feature uses secure private routing to generate concise overviews of unread messages, helping users quickly understand conversation context without scrolling through each chat. It is completely optional, off by default, and built with privacy in mind thanks to Meta's Private Processing technology, which ensures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can read messages or summaries. It appears that WhatsApp is planning to introduce additional optional tools that rely on Private Processing to leverage AI without compromising user privacy. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.21.12 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on an optional feature powered by Private Processing to generate quick chat recaps!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature that will allow users to generate a summary of specific conversations, scheduled for release in a future update. Unlike the existing message summaries that generate quick overviews of unread messages in a single chat, this new feature called Quick Recap aims to provide a more detailed summary of unread messages in selected conversations. This will help users catch up more efficiently across multiple conversations without needing to read through every single message. Instead of forcing users to scroll endlessly through long threads, Quick Recap would present a neatly condensed version of what has been discussed, making it easier to catch up after a period of absence.
What makes this particularly interesting is the way it leverages Meta AI while still maintaining strict privacy protections. Before any processing occurs, the selected message data and request is handled through Private Processing, a dedicated privacy-preserving environment. Private Processing ensures that the raw message content never leaves the secure enclave in a readable form, and it uses encryption and isolated computation to guarantee that neither WhatsApp nor Meta has access to either the original data or the generated recap. This extra step is crucial because it allows the app to provide sophisticated AI‑driven tools while preserving the confidentiality of private conversations and maintaining end‑to‑end encryption.
In practical terms, users will be able to open the Chats tab, choose up to five conversations, and tap on a new icon labeled Quick Recap. When this action is triggered, Private Processing immediately gets to work, securely preparing unread messages so that Meta AI can generate a recap without ever exposing personal information. After a few moments, the user receives a concise summary of the most relevant unread messages in each selected conversation, helping them save time and effort.
It's worth noting that Quick Recap will only support up to five chats at a time. This means that if users want summaries for more conversations, they will need to run the process again for other groups or individual chats. In addition, chats protected by Advanced Chat Privacy cannot be included in Quick Recap. This restriction is not due to any weakness for the architecture behind Private Processing, but rather out of respect for those users who have explicitly chosen to exclude AI-powered features from specific conversations.
As with other AI-powered tools in WhatsApp, Quick Recap will be entirely optional. The feature will not be enabled by default, as users must enable it manually through the app settings. This approach ensures that users retain full control over whether to use Quick Recap, with the confidence that any messages processed and summary requests made are securely protected by Private Processing. By design, this will empower users to decide if, when, and how they want to leverage Quick Recap according to their own preferences and comfort level.
An optional feature powered by Private Processing to generate quick chat recaps is under development and it will be available in a future update. We will keep you updated with an additional article as soon as we have more details to share about this feature.
