PRIVATE WRITING HELP

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.18.18 update, we announced that an AI-powered feature to privately summarize messages in chats and groups was available. This feature is designed to help users quickly catch up on unread messages by generating concise overviews without compromising their privacy. Leveraging Meta AI through the Private Processing system, the summaries are created entirely within a secure environment that ensures no message content leaves the user's device and remains inaccessible to WhatsApp, Meta, or any external party. As previously hinted by WhatsApp in the update introducing private message summaries, attention is now shifting toward the development of a new feature aimed at privately improving the structure of outgoing messages. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.19.8 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a Writing Help feature powered by AI Private Processing to enhance messages!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature that will allow users to improve their messages in a private way, scheduled for release in a future update. This feature will introduce a convenient tool for users who want to enhance their written communication directly within the app through Meta AI and Private Processing. Private Processing uses encrypted connections and anonymous routing to keep user requests unlinkable to their identity. Writing Help can send a request to the Private Processing infrastructure, which securely generates message suggestions without storing any message data or leaving a trace.

After enabling Private Processing from the app settings, a dedicated button will appear within the emoji keyboard, allowing users to rely on a private AI-powered writing assistant. By tapping on this button, users will have the option to enhance their message using different tones. For example, they can ask Meta AI to correct grammatical errors by rephrasing the message, making their text clearer and more polished. Additionally, they can select the "Professional" tone, which will adjust the message to sound more formal and business-appropriate while maintaining the original intent of the message. For a more light-hearted approach, users will be able to select the "Funny" tone, which adds humor or playful elements to their message, making it particularly useful for friendly conversations. On the other hand, the "Supportive" tone will transform messages into more empathetic and encouraging language, making it ideal for situations where the user wants to offer comfort or motivation.

Each tone will generate at least three suggestions, when available, allowing users to choose the one that best suits their needs. While these are the primary tones compatible with Writing Help, WhatsApp may explore introducing additional tones in the future, offering users even more ways to customize their messages and further enhancing the flexibility and personalization of their messaging experience. Once the user reviews the options, they can decide whether to replace their original message with the AI-enhanced version before sending it, all without the recipients knowing that Writing Help was used.

If users choose to, they will be able to share their feedback about the messages improved by Writing Help. However, it's worth noting that this process is completely private: neither the original message nor the enhanced version is shared with WhatsApp or Meta. Only the feedback itself is sent, ensuring that no personal message content leaves the user's device. This will help WhatsApp understand how users feel about the Writing Help feature and improve it accordingly.

It's very important to mention that this feature will be optional. Users who prefer not to use Private Processing to enhance their messages can simply avoid tapping the AI-powered writing assistant button or disable the feature in the app settings. Additionally, WhatsApp will not automatically modify any messages without the user's explicit request. Writing Help will only privately analyze the specific message the user has selected, as other messages within the same conversation will remain untouched and unaccessible.

A Writing Help feature powered by AI Private Processing to enhance messages is under development and it will be available in a future update. We will keep you updated with an additional article as soon as we have more details to share about this feature.
