SCAN DOCUMENTS

In the article about the WhatsApp for iOS 24.25.89 update, we announced that a feature to scan documents with the camera was available. This feature lets iOS users quickly capture documents directly within WhatsApp, adjust the borders to frame the content accurately, and send the scanned files instantly in their chats or groups. It's a convenient and efficient way to capture documents, eliminating the need for separate apps or web services. It appears that WhatsApp now intends to bring the same document scanning functionality to Android users in the future, ensuring a consistent experience across both platforms. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.18.29 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature to scan documents with the camera!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a new document scanning option directly within the document-sharing section, scheduled for release in a future update. This new option will allow users to effortlessly scan documents on the go, without having to rely on a separate application. Once this feature is available, users will be able to select the "Scan document" option and immediately activate their phone's camera. At this point, the camera preview will appear, allowing the user to point their camera at the document they want to capture.

This new functionality is designed to be flexible and adaptable to different scenarios. To this end, WhatsApp is offering two modes for capturing documents to suit the preferences of all users: manual and automatic. The manual mode will let users control exactly when the photo is taken. This can be particularly useful when users need to adjust framing to produce the clearest scan. The automatic mode, on the other hand, intelligently detects the borders of the document and performs the capture without any intervention from the user, making it a faster and more convenient option when a quick scan is needed.

Once the photo is captured, whether manually or automatically, WhatsApp will convert it into a PDF immediately. The result is a document that's ready to be shared directly in a chat or a group. It's important to note that this process happens entirely on the device and makes use of native Android APIs for document scanning. The files remain safely on the device's local storage and are only routed through WhatsApp once users explicitly send them. These documents are protected by end-to-end encryption, assuring users that the content is kept private and accessible only to the chat participants.

A feature to scan documents with the camera is under development and it will be available in a future update. We will keep you updated with an additional article as soon as we have more details to share about this feature.
