This feature will rely on Private Processing, a secure architecture designed to protect user privacy while enabling advanced AI-powered capabilities. Private Processing will ensure that all message summarization requests are encrypted, processed in secure environments, and remain entirely confidential, so that neither WhatsApp, Meta, nor any third parties can access the message content. It appears that WhatsApp is now focused on developing tools that enhance the transparency of Private Processing to help users better understand how their data is elaborated. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.17.8 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on a feature to create on-device activity reports for Private Processing!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is exploring the implementation of a feature that will allow users to request activity reports regarding Private Processing, scheduled for release in a future update. These detailed reports are designed to explain how users private requests were processed, highlighting how the AI-generated results, such as message summaries or writing assistance, were produced. The reports will include insights into how secure sessions were established, along with the technical steps followed during the private processing of a user request. They will also provide a record of what data was privately shared with the infrastructure, and how that data was used exclusively within the secure environment.

For example, when users request a summary of unread messages in a group chat, WhatsApp may generate an Activity Report showing when the summary was requested, how the secure session was initiated, which methods were used to establish trust, and how the secure environment handled the processing from start to finish. The report might also explain that the messages were privately transmitted over a secure channel, and then summarized using AI models operating entirely within that protected space. This level of transparency is designed to help users verify that their privacy was fully preserved, even while using advanced AI capabilities.

It's worth noting that this feature is entirely optional, but it represents a major step toward giving users greater visibility into how advanced AI tools work behind the scenes. WhatsApp aims to make these reports easily accessible right within the app settings while demonstrating the commitment to privacy and user control. Private Processing enables users to benefit from smart features like message summarization without compromising the core principle of end-to-end encryption, and these reports will offer clear and on-device explanations of what data was privately processed.
