SHARE TOPICS - STATUS UPDATES

In the article about the WhatsApp for iOS 25.14.77 update, we announced that a feature to create and share topics for status updates was available. This feature introduces a new interactive "Add Yours" sticker, designed to spark spontaneous chains of content within the status interface. It allows users to post a themed prompt, such as a question, idea, or challenge, and invite others to respond by creating their own status updates with the same sticker. It appears that WhatsApp now intends to offer Android users the same content sticker as it already does for the iOS version, aiming to provide a consistent experience across both platforms. Following the release of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.15.13 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is rolling out a feature to create and share topics for status updates!

As you can see from the attached screenshot, some beta testers can now add a new "Add Yours" content sticker to their status updates. This new sticker allows users to start a chain based on a custom topic of their choice. Once the topic is selected and the sticker is placed on a photo or video within the status update, viewers will have the option to continue the chain by sharing their own media related to the original prompt. For example, a user might post a status with a dog photo and the prompt "Add yours: the cutest photo of your dog". Contants who see this status can tap on the sticker and respond by posting their own photo of their pet through their own status update.

Each contribution becomes part of the chain, though it's always shared independently. This means that when someone joins the chain and adds their own photo or video, their contacts will only see that individual update and not other responses in the chain. There's no centralized view of all entries, and there’s no way to trace a response back to the original prompt unless the originator is already in the viewer's contacts and has shared the status with them. This approach ensures that end-to-end encryption is maintained and users can feel safe and in control when participating.

This feature is designed to boost engagement with status updates by offering users a fresh and entertaining way to interact with their contacts. By enabling people to respond to themed prompts through photos or videos, it adds a layer of creativity and personalization to the status experience. It's worth noting that some users running the latest stable version of WhatsApp for Android may have access to the "Add Yours" sticker, even though they are not enrolled in the beta program. This suggests that WhatsApp may be enabling the feature more broadly through a server-side rollout. As a result, access to this functionality might not be limited strictly to beta testers.

A feature to create and share topics for status updates is available to some beta testers who install the latest update of WhatsApp beta for Android from the Google Play Store, and it is rolling out to even more people over the coming weeks.
